The baggage and the benefits that travel with the F word
We examined how locally situated and transnationally circulated meanings of feminism interact forming implicit cultural meanings, and how these meanings about feminism appear in women's accounts of their own work and identifications. Using twenty‐four oral histories, we identified four implicit cultural meanings about feminism: (1) “Mainstream” feminism is/as white and middle‐class; (2) Feminists are lesbians; (3) Feminism is/as hostile to men; a…
Voice and Context
Racism, sexism, or other forms of bias may be reinforced by the delivery of a news story. This delivery refers to the grammatical structure of the story including the order in which details of a story are delivered. One tool for organizing grammatical structure – voice, which describes whether an action is active (performed by a subject on an object) or passive (performed on a subject by an object) – is especially useful for embedding impressions…
Vulnerability and empowerment on the ground
Vulnerability is a standard criterion used by state and non-governmental organizations to identify groups of people in need of protection or support. Over the past two decades, however, this notoriously ill-defined and potentially stigmatizing term has been subjected to scrutiny by researchers, service providers, and theorists across multiple disciplines. This study examines the relevance of vulnerability to the ways international feminist activi…
The geopolitics of cyberspace and the European Union’s changing identity
Cyberspace has brought significant technological innovations and benefits, but also new legal and political challenges. It created a ‘new geography’, where traditional physical borders co-exist with virtual space, posing novel security threats that complement conventional understandings of security. The resulting ‘cyberspace geopolitics’ comprises multiple actors that are increasingly in competition and conflict with each other. This article expl…
Digital Communication and Hybrid Threats
Statecraft and Post-Imperial Attractiveness
The article explores the effects of the Soviet legacy on efforts to promote regional integration in the post-Soviet space and Russia's approach to integration, based primarily on the example of the Commonwealth of Independent States. It begins with an exploration of the nature of Russia's imperial past and how attitudes deriving from that have affected integration projects. Post-imperial attitudes have both impelled Russia to pursue integration a…
Russian Cultural Statecraft in the Eurasian Space
This article is an introduction to a special issue that deals with Russia’s cultural statecraft in the Eurasian space. The contributions focus on the role of civilizational discourses, status, historical legacies and educational diplomacy in Russia’s foreign policy and in its relations with its neighbors. We have opted for the term ‘cultural statecraft’ rather than ‘soft power’ or ‘hybrid warfare’ that are frequently used when cultural aspects of…
With a Little Help from my Friends’
This essay examines Russian argumentation on its visa-free regime with the EU within the context of discussions about modernisation. It examines arguments within the Russian foreign policy establishment about modernisation, Russia’s modernisation partnership with the EU and visa-free travel, and how these issues are linked. First, the essay outlines two models of Russian modernisation, comprehensive and selective. Then the Russia–EU modernisation…

Russia as a great power
The article examines Russia as a great power from the point of view of status inconsistency theory. Applications of the theory to Russia have focused on the status accorded to Russia in diplomatic representation and membership of key international organizations, which suggests that Russia is a ‘status overachiever’ in that it has an international status that is greater than its actual capabilities would warrant. However, this article focuses on R…
Die noodsaaklikheid van ’n ander paradigma vir Suid-Afrikaanse sosiologie
The necessity of another paradigm for South African sociology. Contemporary South Africa places the practice of sociology before unusual challenges on both theoretical and practical problem-solving levels. In order to meet these challenges we urgently need a paradigm in which the creational nature of reality is acknowledged. Accepting such a paradigm is in itself a challenge because of the foothold the existing paradigm has on western thought. Un…
