  • The region and trade

    Peter V Schaeffer, Peter Schaeffer•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2018

Two traditions have shaped trade theory. Adam Smith highlighted the division of labour and David Ricardo comparative advantage. Ricardo initially had the greater impact, but over the last three dec

  • Assimilation of Foreigners in Former West Germany

    Open Access•Peter V Schaeffer, James O Bukenya•ARTICLE•International Migration•2010•Cited by: 6•References: 1

Migration movements to industrialized countries have grown in number and size, and the presence of large numbers of immigrants has raised concerns about their integration and assimilation into host societies. This article is an empirical study of assimilation of foreign nationals in Germany. Their experience may hold lessons for other relatively recent immigration destinations. As expected, language is one of the most critical factors for determi…

  • Refugees

    Open Access•Peter V Schaeffer, Peter Schaeffer•ARTICLE•International Migration•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 8

Unless literally forced to leave, prospective refugees have a choice between staying and flight, subject to constraints, particularly the willingness of a country to grant asylum. Although all options may be unpleasant, they nonetheless represent alternatives amenable to economic analysis. The incentive to flee is a function of threat severity and credibility, and the attractiveness of available safe havens. The theoretical analysis suggests that…

  • Exploring Gap Analysis to Evaluate Participant Satisfaction Regarding Community Development Planning Programs

    Michael F Walsh, Peter V Schaeffer•ARTICLE•Community Development•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 20

This research examines the effect of participants' expectations on their satisfaction regarding community development planning programs. The marketing literature establishes that satisfaction depends on whether experiences meet or exceed expectations, a concept operationalized as “gap analysis,” but studies have not previously considered that participants' expectations and experiences may drive their satisfaction regarding economic development pl…

Significant ethnic minority business growth has occurred in the United States in the post-World War II period. The self-employment pattern of ethnic minority business, particularly the success of Asian-immigrant small business, is currently explained by two different hypotheses: the social resources explanation and the class resources explanation. While the former approach attributes the large number of small business enterprises and their succes…

Previous attempts to describe or model planning behavior have failed to focus on a decision variable for the activity of planning itself. Attempts to use economic theory to explain planning by modeling only the phenomena being planned for have not been useful in explaining or understanding planning behavior. The model developed in this paper for land development planning makes explicit the decision to plan at each stage of the development process…

  • Barriers and Foresight in International Labor-Migration

    Open Access•P Schaeffer, Peter V Schaeffer•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1984•Cited by: 2•References: 4

In the presence of barriers to mobility, migration behavior depends importantly on a worker's planning horizon. Although a myopic worker will accept the job offer promising the greatest immediate utility, a worker with foresight also values the opportunities that a job offers, to gain access to more highly valued alternatives. A model of labor migration based on these ideas, shows the importance of institutional arrangements and lends itself to t…

  • A Dynamical Model of Labor-Market Change in International Labor Migrations When Demand for Labor is Exogenous

    Open Access•Peter V Schaeffer•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Relatively little is known about the long-run behavior of international labor migrations. One of the biggest concerns in immigration debates relates to the continued pressure on the borders of the wealthy countries. This immigration pressure will decline significantly only if the poor nations manage to provide more high-wage jobs. An earlier model of international labor migration is used to derive additional insights into the growth and decline o…
