  • Firearm Restraining Order Implementation Case Study in Lake County, Illinois

Open Access•Maryann Mason, Benjamin Katz et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2025

Risk-based firearm laws are a firearm injury prevention strategy. However, evidence for their efficacy in reducing firearm injury is mixed. There is agreement that the magnitude of their effect depends on implementation and efficacy would improve with better implementation. Local context and processes are key to evaluating outcomes of these laws. To contribute to the evidence base we conducted a case study of Firearm Restraining Order (FRO) imple…

  • A cross-sectional study of opioid involvement in non-poisoning suicide – risks and prevention opportunities

Open Access•Maryann Mason, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The opioid overdose crisis largely has not overlapped with non-poisoning suicide in this study. Overall, our analyses have not identified additional risk factors for suicide among opioid-positive suicide decedents. However, the overlap between opioid-positivity, SUD, and physical and mental health problems found among decedents in our data suggest several suicide prevention opportunities. These include medication assisted treatment for SUD which …

  • Physical education environment and student physical activity levels in low-income communities

Open Access•Soyang Kwon, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

PE lessons with higher motor content and higher teacher's in-class PA promotion are more likely to meet the recommended level of MVPA in all school levels. However, the sub-categories of motor content and lesson location could impact student MVPA differently by school levels

  • Daily Physical Activity Among Toddlers

Open Access•Soyang Kwon, Kyle S Honegger et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Physical activity (PA) habits seem to track over time from as young as early childhood. For children under age 3 years, wearable sensor-measured PA levels have begun to be investigated. The aims of this study were to evaluate the feasibility of using hip- vs. wrist-worn accelerometers, and to report accelerometer-derived PA metrics among toddlers. A convenience sample of 22 toddlers aged 13 to 35 months and their mothers were recruited for this s…

Open Access•Maryann Mason, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social Science•2014

Hispanic children in the United States are at high risk of obesity. Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption (SSB) is a modifiable contributor to obesity. Hispanic children are more likely to drink SSB than non-Hispanic white children. The main goal of the study was to explore caregiver beverage feeding behaviors and evaluate reactions to water intake recommendations for children birth to five years old in a diverse U.S. Hispanic urban community. Fin…

    Maryann Mason, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•Community Development•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Ciclovìas create temporary spaces for physical activity by closing off streets to motorized traffic for short periods of time—typically a day at a time. In Chicago, these health promotion events are called “Open Streets” and follow a route through five diverse communities. We report findings for evaluation of 2008--2009 Open Streets events. The evaluation creates a framework for examining Ciclovìa outcomes and tracks attendance, participant chara…

A mixed method study was conducted to assess the utility of adding health-focused obesity prevention programs/services to food distribution sites. A Project Advisory Committee (comprised of service agencies interested in extending services to food distribution sites) led the project. Field surveys and focus groups were conducted with food distribution participants at four community food distribution sites in Chicago. User opinions/suggestions for…

  • Role Sharing Between Evaluators and Stakeholders in Practice

    Open Access•Jenifer Cartland, Holly S Ruch‐Ross et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 1

In the past three decades, program evaluation has sought to more fully engage stakeholders in the evaluative process. But little information has been gathered from stakeholders about how they share in evaluation tasks and whether role sharing leads to confusion or tensions between the evaluator and the stakeholders. This article reports findings from surveys and interviews with 20 evaluator—project director (lead stakeholder) pairs to explore how…
