  • Functions, challenges and opportunities of health professions education units in Africa

Open Access•Sarah B Welch, Anthea Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Medical Education•2026

BACKGROUND: Teaching in Health Professions Education (HPE) is complex, with educators balancing teaching, clinical, and scholarly responsibilities. Medical, nursing, and other health professional schools have created units to move HPE forward. However, little is known about how these units have evolved over the past 15 years. This study explored the landscape of HPE units in Eastern, Southern, and Western Africa, their evolution, functions, chall…

  • Firearm Restraining Order Implementation Case Study in Lake County, Illinois

Open Access•Maryann Mason, Benjamin Katz et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2025

Risk-based firearm laws are a firearm injury prevention strategy. However, evidence for their efficacy in reducing firearm injury is mixed. There is agreement that the magnitude of their effect depends on implementation and efficacy would improve with better implementation. Local context and processes are key to evaluating outcomes of these laws. To contribute to the evidence base we conducted a case study of Firearm Restraining Order (FRO) imple…

  • Sex differences in physical activity of US children at age 13 months

Open Access•Soyang Kwon, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This cross-sectional study of US children observed a sex gap in total PA at 10-16 months of age. Gross motor development and PA parenting practices did not differ by child sex nor explain the sex difference in PA. A longitudinal investigation should follow to further narrow down when sex differences in PA emerge and to determine the factors that lead to this difference

  • Provider and facility readiness for age-friendly health services for older adults in primary health care centres in southwest, Nigeria

Open Access•Adedoyin Ogunyemi, Modasola Balogun et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

There is a growing focus on interventions at the health system level to promote healthy aging and provide age-friendly health services (AFHS) in low- and middle-income countries where populations are aging. This study aimed to determine the provider and facility readiness for AFHS. We developed and implemented surveys to collect PHC facility capacity and readiness to deliver AFHS and a KAP survey for facility healthcare workers based on guideline…

  • Physical Activity among U.S. Preschool-Aged Children

    Open Access•Soyang Kwon, Megan K O’Brien et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2022

Early childhood is an important development period for establishing healthy physical activity (PA) habits. The objective of this study was to evaluate PA levels in a representative sample of U.S. preschool-aged children. The study sample included 301 participants (149 girls, 3-5 years of age) in the 2012 U.S. National Health and Examination Survey National Youth Fitness Survey. Participants were asked to wear an ActiGraph accelerometer on their w…

  • A cross-sectional study of opioid involvement in non-poisoning suicide – risks and prevention opportunities

Open Access•Maryann Mason, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The opioid overdose crisis largely has not overlapped with non-poisoning suicide in this study. Overall, our analyses have not identified additional risk factors for suicide among opioid-positive suicide decedents. However, the overlap between opioid-positivity, SUD, and physical and mental health problems found among decedents in our data suggest several suicide prevention opportunities. These include medication assisted treatment for SUD which …

  • Physical education environment and student physical activity levels in low-income communities

Open Access•Soyang Kwon, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

PE lessons with higher motor content and higher teacher's in-class PA promotion are more likely to meet the recommended level of MVPA in all school levels. However, the sub-categories of motor content and lesson location could impact student MVPA differently by school levels

  • Hispanic Caregiver Perceptions of Water Intake Recommendations for Young Children and Their Current Beverage Feeding Practices

Open Access•Maryann Mason, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social Science•2014

Hispanic children in the United States are at high risk of obesity. Sugar-sweetened beverage consumption (SSB) is a modifiable contributor to obesity. Hispanic children are more likely to drink SSB than non-Hispanic white children. The main goal of the study was to explore caregiver beverage feeding behaviors and evaluate reactions to water intake recommendations for children birth to five years old in a diverse U.S. Hispanic urban community. Fin…

  • Ciclovìa in Chicago

    Maryann Mason, Sarah B Welch et al.•ARTICLE•Community Development•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Ciclovìas create temporary spaces for physical activity by closing off streets to motorized traffic for short periods of time—typically a day at a time. In Chicago, these health promotion events are called “Open Streets” and follow a route through five diverse communities. We report findings for evaluation of 2008--2009 Open Streets events. The evaluation creates a framework for examining Ciclovìa outcomes and tracks attendance, participant chara…

  • Patient Power? Medical Perspectives on Patient Use of the Internet

Open Access•Jennifer Tann, Adrian E Platts et al.•ARTICLE•Prometheus•2003

Patients and carers now have unprecedented access to health information via specialist journals and the popular media, while the worldwide web has revolutionised public access to clinical information. Levels of patient demand for information about health have grown and there is evidence to suggest that patients wish to receive more information than is sometimes currently provided by clinicians. In secondary care, some specialisms have more readil…
