Adoptive Parent Advice: Challenges, Strategies, and Insights for Future Adoptive Parents
This qualitative study examines the advice from 2,131 adoptive parent responses, answering: “What do you believe is important for future adoptive parents to know?” An inductive thematic analysis yielded the following major findings: Various reasons adoption is challenging, strategies to confront challenges, and how adoption is worth the challenges. Parents describe adoption as difficult because (a) parents have unmet expectations, (b) it is time-…
“I Was Being Used More as a Babysitter Than a Foster Parent”: Qualitative Findings From Foster Parent Surveys in Two States
Foster parent retention is a challenge for child welfare agencies. This article presents findings from open-ended survey responses of foster parents in Mississippi (MS) and Missouri (MO) collected shortly after a foster placement began (MS n = 106; MO n = 62) and after 3 months (MS n = 117; MO n = 83). The research question for this study was: In what ways do foster parents describe their interactions with child welfare workers? Themes identified…
Treasuring our lived mentoring experiences
Who are our caregivers? An assessment of the characteristics of foster parents at certain foster parenting milestones across two states
The number of children in foster care in the United States has risen while new federal regulations in the USA require states to decrease dependence on congregate placements. As family-based settings are the preferred placement option, there is a pressing need to prioritize effective strategies to recruit and retain foster parents. The purpose of this study is to describe the demographic characteristics and life experiences of families who decided…
An exploratory study of the impact of Covid‐19 on foster parenting
As the COVID-19 virus began to spread in the United States of America, states' child welfare administrators and policymakers responded differently. Some states implemented more restrictive policies, some less or did not require many restrictions (i.e., stay at home orders or masking in public spaces). Video-based online focus groups with foster parents in four states utilized a consensual qualitative approach to identify themes relating to foster…
Systematic Review of Factors Affecting Foster Parent Retention
This study utilized the PRISMA protocol to conduct a systematic review of the literature published in the United States from 1989 to 2018 to identify factors that affect foster parent retention. Foster parent perception of their own limitations within the child welfare system, the child welfare system’s ability to function fluidly, and the foster parents’ relationship with the agency affects retention. In addition, the lack of material resources …
The role of advice in life-quality decision-making
While organizational research supports the importance of advice in organizational decision-making, the role of advice in quality-of-life decisions has been virtually ignored. This study fills this gap by qualitatively examining the role of advice as working professionals report making significant life-quality decisions. Adopting a discursive-formations framework, we focus on memorable messages and absences participants describe when discussing ad…
Life-quality decisions: Tension-management strategies used by individuals when making tradeoffs
An investigation of perceived tradeoffs associated with significant life-quality decisions yielded five tension-management strategies which include: a) adopting a guiding philosophy, b) engaging in an ongoing practice, c) perceiving tradeoffs as `nothing given up of value/importance', d) applying a present orientation, and e) applying a future orientation. These strategies emerge as ways working professionals in the United States manage tension. …
What does the pursuit of a high quality of life entail: Grounding a theoretical model in lived experience
In response to calls for a better understanding of quality of life, we draw upon working professionals' perspectives and experiences to introduce a theoretical model that emerged from an inductive analysis of respondents' language. A key element of this model includes a collective picture of factors representing quality of life. Further, this model suggests interrelatedness among these factors with pursuit of a high quality of life emerging as a …

Memorable Messages as Discursive Formations: The Gendered Socialization of New University Faculty
New university faculty are often socialized haphazardly or left to figure out organizational and occupational roles on their own. Further, female faculty often encounter an academic environment which can be hostile, discriminatory, and marginalizing for women. This study examines the impact of gender on the messages new faculty report receiving during socialization and finds gender-based differences among the memorable messages reported. Further,…
A Feminist Response to Issues of Validity in Research
Feminist research has been attacked by critics who claim that it is weak on issues of validity. Feminist researchers can effectively respond to these criticisms by reconceptualizing issues of validity as they relate to feminist goals and research methodologies. Various issues of validity can be addressed through reconceptualization in terms of “trustworthiness” and by demonstrating the “applicability” of research findings. Through such reconceptu…
