  • Using the phenomenology of knowledge-based retrieval failures in younger and older adults to characterize proximity to retrieval success and identify a Zone of Proximal Retrieval

Open Access•Sharda Umanath, Jennifer H Coane et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Memory and Language•2025

Across the lifespan, accumulated knowledge can become inaccessible, with everyone having experienced retrieval failures. These failures are accompanied by varied mental experiences (phenomenology), but little research has been done to distinctly characterize their full range. The present studies examined the extent to which varying failures, ranging from imminent retrieval like tip-of-the-tongue states to unavailability, are associated with disti…

  • Benthic community descriptions at underwater peaks in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica

    Open Access•Stacy Kim, François Cazenave•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2022•References: 34

In McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, fine-scale bathymetry is poorly defined, and benthic communities at water depths over 30 m have not been well described. We describe the benthic communities on two previously unknown bathymetric highs, sampled in 2012 and 2014, using scuba divers, a remotely operated vehicle, and a specially designed time-lapse camera system (SeeStar). One site (Mystery Peak) was capped by a dense thicket of the sponge Homaxinella ba…

  • Employee health and well-being after a crisis - re-imagining the role of workplace inclusion

    Open Access•Ipshita Pal, Ellen Galinsky et al.•ARTICLE•Community Work & Family•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 82

Covid-19 left many employees with life-altering challenges— deaths or illnesses of loved ones, health problems, and economic upheavals. Even during ordinary years, adverse events affect around 50% of employees, exacerbating work/non-work demands and depleting personal resources. In order to identify supports for employee recovery from the pandemic and similar crises, we examine inclusive relational practices. Drawing on a conservation-of-resource…

  • Iceberg disturbance to benthic communities in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica

    Open Access•Stacy Kim, Clint A Collins•ARTICLE•Polar Record•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 36

On the continental shelf of the Antarctic the major disturbance to benthic ecosystems is from iceberg scouring; however, this is based on observations from the Peninsula region. We combine observation and experimentation in the McMurdo Sound region of the Ross Sea to determine if community recovery patterns there are similar to those in better-studied Antarctic regions, and if local immigration is an important factor in recovery dynamics. We foun…

  • The American Adoption of Indian Children from Mother Theresa's Orphanages

    Joan F Goodman, Stacy Kim•ARTICLE•Adoption Quarterly•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This study explores the family backgrounds and personal motives of 70 families who adopted Indian children from Mother Theresa's orphanages in the late 1970s and 1980s. We ask what kind of people seek to adopt children of another ethnic group and color who also are highly likely to have chronic disabilities -physical, emotional, behavioral, intellectual. Our inquiry, while without formal hypotheses, was informed by depictions of altruists and res…
