  • Online Information as a Double-Edged Sword

Open Access•Alexander Helbing, Juliane Heise et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Health•2026

This study examines the relationship between internet use and vaccine scepticism, focusing on the ambivalent role of digital information environments and digital health literacy (DHL). While the internet provides easy access to vaccination-related information, frequent internet use may also increase exposure to misinformation and disinformation. Accordingly, both positive and negative effects of internet-based information seeking are hypothesized…

  • Distinguishing complementary and alternative medicine

Open Access•Juliane Heise, Alexander Helbing et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2026•References: 1

Treating complementary and alternative medicine as distinct reveals different prevalence rates and influencing factors. Religion, satisfaction with the healthcare system, education, age, and gender play varying roles depending on whether CAM is used alongside or instead of conventional medicine. Cross-country differences point to cultural and health system influences. For public health, distinguishing between complementary and alternative use can…

  • It’s Sunny, Be Healthy? An International Comparison of the Influence of Sun Exposure and Latitude Lines on Self-Rated Health

    Open Access•Sandra Jaworeck, Peter Kriwy•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The positive impact of sunshine on self-rated health is well known. For the first time, the relationship between sunshine and self-rated health is examined in the context of latitude lines in international comparison. The further people live from the equator, the lower sun exposure (UVB exposure) and the more often they experience a vitamin D deficiency. UVB exposure decreases with degrees of latitudinal lines, and in addition to that, sunshine d…

    G Krug, Johann Carstensen et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 12

  • The Influence of Regional Social Inequality and Labour Market Characteristics on Health

    Open Access•Christiane Gro, Peter Kriwy•ARTICLE•Comparative Population Studies•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The influence of contextual factors on individual health status has been demonstrated by a number of studies even when controlling for the individual socio-economic situation (and other relevant factors). The article examines whether and to what extent variables of the place of residence have an effect on individual health status. We do not only refer to income levels and inequality, but also to effects of the educational level and inequality and…

  • Look Who's Talking

Open Access•Peter Kriwy, Christiane Gro et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Making a verbal contribution is an efficient means to increase one's visibility in the academic job market. Therefore, we examine the duration and word density of spoken contributions made in debates at sociology conferences held in Germany, thus enriching the discussion on the gender gap in scientific careers. We differentiate between the contributors' age and gender, and the social context of the conferences. Hidden observation of 392 verbal co…

  • Machen Kleider Leute? / Does Clothing Make the Man

Monika Jungbauer-Gans, Roger Berger et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Soziologie•2005•Cited by: 1

  • Social status and adult heights in the two Germanies

Open Access•John Komlos, Peter Kriwy•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2002

The West German capitalistic welfare state provided a more propitious environment for the physical growth of the human organism than did the socialist East German government. There were substantial social differences in height in the officially classless German Democratic Republic
