  • Technocratic Dreams, Political Realities

Open Access•A Zaman, Asad Zaman Asad Zaman•ARTICLE•The Pakistan Development Review•2026

This paper critically examines a recent proposal advocating full-reserve banking in Pakistan, inspired by modern revivals of the Chicago Plan. While such proposals are motivated by legitimate concerns about financial instability, excessive debt creation, and the social consequences of private money creation, the paper argues that they are best understood as institutional power-sharing arrangements rather than purely technical reforms. Using a his…

  • Reclaiming our lives and our planet

    A Zaman•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The looming environmental catastrophe, as well as human crises on multiple fronts, is results of corruption of our human hearts. This arises from a toxic educational process designed to turn us into human resources, with stunted spirituality. Purifying the planet requires purifying ourselves as a first step. Stepping outside the streams of our culture and history to examine our lives from an external perspective provides insights not available in…

  • Monetary Paradoxes of Baby-Sitting Cooperatives

    Open Access•A Zaman•ARTICLE•The Pakistan Development Review•2021

Many authors have described and modelled Keynesian effects in a Baby-sitting Cooperative (BSC), which has the underlying structure of a single good barter economy. We construct a simple model of the BSC economy to explore this issue, and find very surprising results. Outcomes depend on agents beliefs about the decision making process of others, as in the Keynesian beauty contest. For some structures of beliefs, money is neutral, while for others,…

  • Islam's Gift

    Open Access•A Zaman•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 16

According to the standard narrative, economics is an objective and scientific study of universal laws applicable to economic affairs of modern societies. After a brief introduction, the second section of the article presents a counter-narrative that disputes this claim, and provides an alternative point of view that situates modern economics within its European historical, political, and social context. We briefly discuss why the conventional met…

  • Logical Positivism and Islamic Economics

    Open Access•A Zaman•ARTICLE•SSRN Electronic Journal•2012•References: 5

We provide a detailed discussion of current methodology of economics and its emergence from secular roots in Europe. The foundational principles of this methodology, which is based on logical positivism, are in conflict with Islam. We then sketch some alternative methodologies which would be more suitable for Islamic economics

  • Islamic Economics

    A Zaman•ARTICLE•ISLAMIC STUDIES•2010

  • Islamic Economics

    A Zaman•ARTICLE•ISLAMIC STUDIES•2009

A central thesis of this paper is that social science is the study of human experience, and hence is strongly conditioned by history. Modern Western political, economic and social structures have emerged as a consequence of the repudiation of religion associated with the Enlightenment and are based on secular principles. Many of these are discordant with Islamic principles and cannot be adapted to an Islamic society. Around the middle of the twen…
