  • Bridge-builders’ and ‘boundary spanners’

Open Access•Tim Corney, John Gorman et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024

This paper presents a qualitative study of 22 youth workers’ perceptions of their roles and practices in seven school-based settings in a large post-industrial city in regional Australia. Youth workers are often engaged in school-based settings working with vulnerable young people, yet knowledge of how workers perceive and conceptualize their role and practice in these settings remains limited. Through focus group interviews, youth workers were a…

• Host community visioning

Sebastian Filep, Alexandra Law et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Recreation Research•2015•References: 44

Academic examinations of visioning, the active imagination of possible futures, have been largely overlooked in tourism studies. While a significant tradition of research on visioning exists outside tourism, particularly within urban planning, there is a lack of knowledge on host community visioning processes in island tourism destinations and potential positive outcomes of such processes. This paper explores possible futures envisioned by reside…

Open Access•Violaine Lemay, Alexandra Law et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Law and…•2011•References: 3

  • Risk, Realism and the Politics of Resistance

    Open Access•George S Rigakos, Alexandra Law•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 29

Social theorizing about risk has produced important implications for both analytic strategy and resistance. The ontology of risk, however, has either been taken for granted or dismissed altogether. We consider what a realist philosophy of risk might look like given the desire to analyze risks as more than discursive constructs yet avoiding the pitfalls of empiricism. We argue that a necessary first step is to treat as ontologically real both the …

  • A simple method for calculating the prevalence of disease in a past human population

    Open Access•Alexandra Law, Andrea Law•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004

A simple method for calculating the prevalence of disease in a past human population is described with particular reference to osteoarthritis. It can be applied to diseases other than osteoarthritis, and should prove particularly useful when studying the epidemiology of other diseases which affect numerous sites within the body and where the overall prevalence cannot be obtained simply by adding the prevalences of the individual sites, because mo…
