  • Spatiotemporal trends and urban-climate interactions of land surface temperature dynamics across Bangladesh

Open Access•Md Riyadul Haque, Arman Arman et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2026

  • Climate impact emergence and flood peak synchronization projections in the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna basins under CMIP5 and CMIP6 scenarios

Open Access•Anne Gädeke, Michel Wortmann et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

The densely populated delta of the three river systems of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna is highly prone to floods. Potential climate change-related increases in flood intensity are therefore of major societal concern as more than 40 million people live in flood-prone areas in downstream Bangladesh. Here we report on new flood projections using a hydrological model forced by bias-adjusted ensembles of the latest-generation global climate mode…

  • Salinization of the Bangladesh Delta worsens economic precarity

Open Access•Joyce Chen, Valerie Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•Population and Environment•2022•References: 28

Anthropogenic environmental changes are having complex effects on all aspects of the hydrological cycle. In estuarine areas, these factors are coalescing to increase saline contamination. Between 2006 and 2007, coastal Bangladesh experienced a sudden and dramatic increase in water salinity, with the saline front shifting inland by roughly 20km. We use this exceptional event to explore the impact of salinity on economic activity and agricultural p…

  • Enhanced flood risk with 1.5 °C global warming in the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna basin

Open Access•Peter Uhe, Dann Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Flood hazard is a global problem, but regions such as south Asia, where people’s livelihoods are highly dependent on water resources, can be affected disproportionally. The 2017 monsoon flooding in the Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna (GBM) basin, with record river levels observed, resulted in ∼1200 deaths, and dramatic loss of crops and infrastructure. The recent Paris Agreement called for research into impacts avoided by stabilizing climate at 1.5 °C …

  • A global network for operational flood risk reduction

    Open Access•Lorenzo Alfieri, Sagy Cohen et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2018•Cited by: 2

Every year riverine flooding affects millions of people in developing countries, due to the large population exposure in the floodplains and the lack of adequate flood protection measures. Preparedness and monitoring are effective ways to reduce flood risk. State-of-the-art technologies relying on satellite remote sensing as well as numerical hydrological and weather predictions can detect and monitor severe flood events at a global scale. This p…

  • The Effects of Global Economic Restructuring on Urban Women's Work and Income-Generating Strategies in Dhaka, Bangladesh

    Open Access•Kathryn B Ward, Kathryn Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2004•Cited by: 8•References: 29

This research examines women's work and shifts among factory, domestic service, sex work, and urban micro credit sectors in Bangladesh using a continuum of formal-informal-household labor. We explore women's income generating strategies and possible alternatives during global restructuring and changes in trade agreements. The end of Multi-Fibre Agreement in 2004 threatens women's garment employment and Bangladesh's dependence on garments to produ…

  • Visual Experience in Infants: Decreased Attention to Familiar Patterns Relative to Novel Ones

Open Access•Rifat Akhter, Robert L Fantz et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1964

A complex visual pattern presented for ten successive 1-minute exposure periods was fixated progressively less than comparable novel stimuli by infants 2 to 6 months old. This indicates the occurrence of recognition and habituation of visual responsiveness to specific patterns, and suggests that familiarization with the environment begins through visual exploration before more active exploration is possible.
