Performance approaches to whole society resilience
In this article, we reflect on the ways in which arts practices can contribute productively to national resilience strategies. We focus particularly on the UK Government Resilience Framework (2023, UKGRF) which calls for a 'whole of society' approach to resilience, echoing established initiatives addressing 'whole community' (USA) and 'total defence' (Sweden, Switzerland). In this context, we ask what performance research methods offer to underst…
Towards ‘strategy as performance’ in hazard mitigation
Performing City Resilience is a collaborative research project that investigates interrelations between theories, practices and strategies of city resilience, and those of performance. In this essay, the authors explore ways performance might conceive of and contribute to practices of hazard mitigation strategy to better understand how these might lead to a resilient city. They focus on their research in New Orleans, working with the Office of Ho…

The Law and Ethics of Medical Research
The British Periodical Press and the French Revolution, 1789–99
This study challenges the conventional polarities used to describe British politics of the 1790s; Pitt versus Fox, Burke versus Paine, Church versus Dissent, ruling class versus working class, Jacobin versus anti-Jacobin. Such polarities were sedulously promoted by Pitt's wartime government, which applied 'Jacobin' shamelessly to all its critics and opponents, and thus foreshadowed the McCarthyite tactic of guilt by association. The author seeks …

Rediscovery of America
Slaves, Quakers and ‘Free Americans’
It was Jean-Pierre Brissot who in July 1789, as a representative of the revolutionary commune of Paris, handed the key of the Bastille to Lafayette, thus starting the key on its journey to George Washington's home at Mount Vernon, Virginia. The incident is all the more piquant because Brissot, as a 30-year-old lawyer with journalistic aspirations, had himself been briefly imprisoned in the Bastille five years before, for allegedly libelling Marie…
