  • The Matilda Effect in Soviet scientometrics? Nalimov, Mulchenko, and the origins of Naukometriya

    Open Access•Ivan Kislenko, Emanuel Kulczycki•ARTICLE•Quantitative Science Studies•2026

This article revisits the early history of Soviet scientometrics, examining the role of Zinaida Mulchenko in writing Naukometriya—the foundational book in this field. While Vasily V. Nalimov is widely regarded as the sole author of the book, the influence of Mulchenko remains mostly unknown. We argue that her involvement in writing Naukometriya was also significant. To support this claim, we first reveal the key aspects of her biography obtained …

  • Canons and Colonies: A Global Trajectory of Sociology

    Open Access•R Connell, Ivan Kislenko et al.•ARTICLE•Sotsiologicheskoe Obozrenie /…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The history of sociology as a field of knowledge, especially in the English-speaking world, has been obscured by the discipline’s own origin myth in the form of a canon of “classical theory” concerned with European modernity. Sociology was involved in the world of empire from the start. Making the canon more inclusive, in gender, race, and even global terms, is not an adequate correction. Important types of social knowledge, including movement-ba…

  • Between north and south: Decolonial isolationism of Russian social science in the state of war and beyond

    Open Access•Ivan Kislenko•ARTICLE•European Societies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This paper examines Russian social science in the state of Russia's war in Ukraine. Post-socialist coloniality of Russian scholars eventually led to the desire to contest the scientific hegemony of the West and to have a unique local sociology, mostly inspired by political context. These ideas became part of the political agenda and Putin constantly claims that Russia is a leader of the anti-colonial world. His claims are accompanied by the desir…

    Open Access•Ivan Kislenko•ARTICLE•Sotsiologicheskoe Obozrenie /…•2019•References: 17

This article offers the institutional side of the global sociological project presented by M. Burawoy for consideration. The main critics of this approach currently ignore the role of institutions, and concentrate more often on the ideological side of the issue. In this paper, it is proposed to trace the usage of the institutional mechanisms of the ISA to promote the idea of the internationalization of sociology on a global scale. On the basis of…
