Wicksteed, Philip Henry (1844–1927)
Wicksteed was born in October 1844 in Leeds, where his father, Charles Wicksteed, was a Unitarian minister. He died, at the age of 83, in March 1927, at Childrey in Berkshire. He attended Ruthin Grammar School in North Wales and then University College School, London, before studying at University College London (1861–1864) and at Manchester New College (1864–1867) in Gordon Square nearby. He received his Master’s degree, with a gold medal for cl…
Economic theory and economic thought
The comparative statics of industry-level produced-input-use in HOS trade theory
We consider the industry-level use of inputs, per unit of gross output, in a Heckscher–Ohlin–Samuelson model in which not only land and labour but the two produced commodities are used as inputs. The rate of interest is zero throughout and all the standard assumptions are made. When alternative equilibria are compared, the use of land (of labour) is always lower when the real rent (real wage) is higher. But even the assumption of Hicksian substit…

Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities and the Open Economy
The small open economy assumption cannot protect marginalist theory from the Sraffian critique. But a member of Sraffian ideas are not readily applicable in the open economy context.
Distribution, Prices and Choice of Technique in Kaleckian Theory
A Kaleckian mark-up theory of pricing implies a trade-off frontier between mark-ups and wages, with the result that mark-ups and wages cannot all be independently determined-by whatever processes. Wages in different industries are just as much in conflict as are wages and mark-ups. The way in which relative commodity prices change in response to changes in relative mark-ups may be 'counter-intuitive'. When a choice of technique is allowed for-and…
Jevons's Theory of Political Economy and the ‘Marginalist Revolution’
Very many statements have been made about the (non-)existence and characterisation of the ‘marginal revolution’ but it is urged here that detailed study of the relevant texts is far more valuable than the making of grand statements about such matters. In particular, a close reading of Jevons's Theory of Political Economyis proposed as an antidote to over-easy generalisation. Jevons by no means rejected all elements of classical theory. He did not…
Points for Kaleckians
Questions for Kaleckians ∗
Two central facts about modern industrial economies are that productive processes (a) use produced inputs and (b) produce more than one kind of output. Yet the Kaleckian mark–up theory of pricing and of distribution, which purports to be empirically realistic and concerned with modern industrial economies, pays little or no attention is paid to these real world phenomena, it is found that a number of familiar Kaleckian constructions and claims ar…

Perversity without complementarity ∗
It has been shown by Tatsuo Hatta that, in a Wicksellian or dated labour model of production, Hicksian input complementarity is a necessary condition for ‘capital perversity’. It is shown here that Hicksian input complementarity at the more fundamental level of real industries is nota necessary condition for ‘perversity’

To compare Ronald Meek’s long Introduction to the second edition of his Studies in the Labour Theory of Value (1973) with the unchanged original text (1956) is to see at once how greatly the discussion of Marx’s economics has changed over the last quarter of a century. Basics, Non-Basics and Joint Production
The distinction between basic and non-basic commodities plays a central role in the analysis presented by Sraffa in his Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities (1960). Thus, the conditions of production of basics are said to play an essential part in the determination of prices and the rate of profit, while those of non-basics do not; it follows, in turn, that the effects of taxes and of changes in methods of production are said to depe…
Heterogeneous Labour and ≪classical≫ Theory
That labour is heterogeneour is obvious, as is the significance in many dimensions, of that heterogeneity. Yet the real‐world importance of heterogeneous labour is not always reflected in economic theory, “classical” or other: the purpose of this paper is therefore to develop somewhat further the brief discussions of heterogeneous labour contained in my Marx after Sraffa (1977, pp. 88‐94, 18‐9) 1 .
