  • Differential Privacy and the Accuracy of County-Level Net Migration Estimates

    Open Access•Richelle Winkler, Richelle L Winkler et al.•ARTICLE•Population Research and Policy…•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 8

Each decade since the 1950s, demographers have generated high-quality net migration estimates by age, sex, and race for US counties using decennial census data as starting and ending populations. The estimates have been downloaded tens of thousands of times and widely used for planning, diverse applications, and research. Census 2020 should allow the series to extend through the 2010–2020 decade. The accuracy of new estimates, however, could be c…

  • The Third Shift? Gender and Empowerment in a Women's Ecotourism Cooperative

    Open Access•Mayra Sanchez Morgan, Richelle Winkler et al.•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 49

Ecotourism is lauded as a path toward sustainable development and women's empowerment in rural areas around the world, but little is known about how gendered expectations shape its processes and outcomes. This paper employs an in-depth qualitative case study of a female-only ecotourism cooperative in rural Mexico to investigate how local gender dynamics influence women's opportunities to benefit from ecotourism development. Findings show that wom…

  • Moving Toward Integration? Effects of Migration on Ethnoracial Segregation Across the Rural-Urban Continuum

    Open Access•Richelle Winkler, Richelle L Winkler et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2016•Cited by: 10•References: 48

This study analyzes the impact of migration on ethnoracial segregation among U.S. counties. Using county-level net migration estimates by age, race, and Hispanic origin from 1990-2000 and 2000-2010, we estimate migration's impact on segregation by age and across space. Overall, migration served to integrate ethnoracial groups in both decades, whereas differences in natural population change (increase/decrease) would have increased segregation. Ag…

  • Migration signatures across the decades

    Open Access•K M Johnson, Richelle Winkler et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2015•Cited by: 10•References: 21

BACKGROUND: Migration is the primary population redistribution process in the United States. Selective migration by age, race/ethnic group, and spatial location governs population integration, affects community and economic development, contributes to land use change, and structures service needs. OBJECTIVE: Delineate historical net migration patterns by age, race/ethnic, and rural-urban dimensions for United States counties. METHODS: Net migrati…
