The Experiential Advantage in Consumption
Previous research indicates that individuals derive greater happiness from spending on experiences than on material possessions. However, these studies have relied primarily on U.S. samples and research designs in which participants directly rated their happiness with recalled purchases. This study examines whether the “experiential advantage” holds in a non-U.S. context, specifically among two samples from Hungary in East-Central Europe, which d…
Does the unemployment rate moderate the well‐being disadvantage of the unemployed? Within‐region estimates from the European Social Survey
Using pooled cross‐sectional data (eight waves of the European Social Survey), this work analysed how the regional unemployment rate influences the well‐being disadvantages of the unemployed. We estimate region fixed effects and slopes models that, unlike the standard region fixed effects approach, provide an unbiased estimate of the cross‐level interaction term (between being unemployed and the unemployment rate) in the absence of unobserved tim…
Perceived income inequality, perceived unfairness and subjective social status in Europe
This article examines the relationship between perceived income inequality, the perceived unfairness of income distribution (discrepancy between an individual’s perceived and preferred levels of income inequality) and subjective social status. Using four waves of the ‘Social Inequality’ module of the International Social Survey Programme (28 European countries, 70 000 individuals) and an empirical strategy that controls for a rich set of objectiv…
Temperature, climate change, and human conception rates
In this paper, we examine the relationship between temperature and human conception rates and project the impacts of climate change by the mid-twenty-first century. Using complete administrative data on 6.8 million pregnancies between 1980 and 2015 in Hungary, we show that exposure to hot temperatures reduces the conception rate in the first few weeks following exposure, but a partial rebound is observed after that. We project that with absent ad…
Temperature, climate change, and birth weight
We analyze the impact of in utero temperature exposure on the birth weight and an indicator for low birth weight using administrative data on singleton live births conceived between 2000 and 2016 in Hungary. We find that exposure to high temperatures during pregnancy decreases birth weight, but its impact on the probability of low birth weight is weaker. Exposure to one additional hot day (mean temperature > 25 °C) during the gestation period red…
Egocentric Contact Networks of Older Adults
This article analyzes how the theory of constraints, the socio-emotional and functional selectivity theories can explain the egocentric networks of older adults. The contact diary method is applied on a randomly chosen subsample of a nationally representative cross-sectional sample in Hungary enumerating all active ties and encounters with social contacts of 181 adults aged 50 and above. Age is negatively associated with network size, but it is p…
Association between poverty indicators and social relations
We analyse the association between poverty indicators and social relations using nationally representative data from Hungary. We focus on four poverty indicators (the three standard indicators of Eurostat and perceived financial problems) and a rich set of social relationship indicators (18 variables). Material deprivation is the most strongly linked to the measures of social ties and social integration, whereas income poverty is associated the l…
Ambient temperature and sexual activity
Previous research has found that unusually hot temperatures reduce birth rates eight to ten months later
Az integrációs modell érvényessége
By examining the integrative processes of the Hungarian society we developed two models grouping the members of the Hungarian society based on dimensions of social integration: the Integration model and the Integrative-normative functionalist model. In our study we aim to examine the construction-validity of these two models and to compare their validity to the validity of other well-known models used in the Hungarian research on social stratific…

Age, Period, and Cohort Differences in Work Centrality and Work Values
In this paper, we analyze whether work values differ between three dimensions of time (age, birth cohort, period). Using data of five waves of the World Values Survey and the European Values Study from more than forty countries and hierarchical age-period-cohort regression models, we did not find relevant gaps between birth cohorts with respect to the relative importance of work or with respect to work values. Thus, we claim that, in European and…
The Size and Heterogeneity of Egocentric Networks and Social Integration in Hungary
In this study, we examine the relationship between objective and subjective dimensions of social integration and the size and heterogeneity of an egocentric network using nationally representative databases from Hungary. We measure social integration with the level of trust and the level of public participation (objective dimension) and with individuals’ self-evaluation of whether they are integrated (subjective dimension). Our results show that …
Do People Have Different Views on Work by Age, Period and Birth Cohort
The aim of this article is exploratory: we test empirically whether employment commitment varies by birth cohort, age, and time period. We also examine how perceived work rewards, work values, and labor market regime types are associated with employment commitment. We used data from four waves of the International Social Survey Programme from more than 30 countries. Using hierarchical age-period-cohort models (HAPC) we separated the effect of the…
Intra-Couple Income Distribution and Subjective Well-Being
This article examines the relationship between intra-couple income distribution and subjective well-being, using nationally representative data from Hungary. We show that the association between the woman’s relative income (WRI) (the woman’s share of the couple’s total income) and life satisfaction is negative not only for men but for women as well. Because we control for financial disadvantages on the individual and household level, as well as f…
