  • Do Family Changes Constitute a Comprehensive Demographic Shift? A Comparison of the Spatial Dynamics of Five Family Changes in Switzerland (1969–2023)

Open Access•Adrita Banerjee, Yoann Doignon et al.•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Economische en…•2026•Referencias: 31

Several theories have been proposed to explain the family changes that have occurred in Europe since the mid‐1960s. It is often assumed that as these changes occurred simultaneously; they have a common origin and represent the same demographic shift. This paper aims to test this hypothesis by comparing the spatial dynamics of major family changes in Switzerland at the local level over a period of 50 years (1969–2023). Using civil registry data, w…

  • Borders and the Spatial Diffusion of Family Changes

Open Access•Yoann Doignon, Adrita Banerjee et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

In recent decades, many European countries have experienced significant family changes, including an increase in the proportion of non‐marital births. To understand these family changes in European and Western societies, numerous theories have emerged, accompanied by a wealth of empirical literature. However, the spatial dimension of family change is less studied than other aspects. Moreover, borders can play a role in the diffusion process by ac…

  • Individual and Spatial Determinants of Mortality During the Covid‐19 Pandemic

Open Access•Mélanie Bourguignon, Joan Damiens et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2025•Referencias: 4

The Covid‐19 pandemic marked the year 2020. In Belgium, it led to a doubling in deaths, mainly grouped into two periods. This article aims to compare the relative importance of predictors and individual and spatial determinants of mortality during these two waves to an equivalent non‐pandemic period and to identify whether and to what extent the pandemic has altered the sociodemographic patterns of conventional mortality. The analyses relate to a…

  • Can Spatial Diffusion Process Explain Family Changes? A Spatio‐Temporal Analysis of Nonmarital Births Over 50 Years in Belgium (1968–2017)

    Open Access•Yoann Doignon, Adrita Banerjee•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2025•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 5

Over the decades, many European countries have experienced significant changes in the family, characterised by declining marriage rates, increasing cohabitation, delayed childbearing and persistently low fertility. The Second Demographic Transition (SDT) has been a key framework for understanding these shifts, with alternative theories focusing on economic, cultural, and gender‐related factors. Despite extensive research, the geographical dimensi…

  • Cholera in rural areas

Open Access•Mélanie Bourguignon, Yoann Doignon et al.•ARTICLE•Espace populations sociétés•2024

A major cholera pandemic struck Belgium in 1866, resulting in 43,400 deaths (around 30% of all deaths in 1866) and a drop in life expectancy of more than 5 years. Although cholera is often presented as an urban disease, the Belgian countryside was not spared, and the south of the province of Luxembourg was one of the gateways to the pandemic in 1866. This article answers two questions. Firstly, why were some areas heavily affected by the pandemic…

    Open Access•Yoann Doignon, Thierry Eggerickx•ARTICLE•Espace populations sociétés•2022

  • Decline in fertility in Paris

    Open Access•Sandra Brée, Yoann Doignon•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2022•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 13

The decline in fertility has been the subject of much research, particularly on the countries that were the precursors of this historic decline. But, if research has focused on the mechanisms of the adoption of birth control, studies about the changes in fertility in cities are less frequent. To fill this gap, this article proposes to study Paris, the city where the lowest marital fertility levels were measured during the 19th century (Brée, 2017…

    Yoann Doignon, Christophe Z Guilmoto•ARTICLE•Hérodote•2021

Digital archiving has emerged as a major issue for science at the turn of the 21st century. Within the social sciences, the more specific question of quantitative data is not exempt from this challenge. But just as much as the preservation of data, the question of access to these archives arises. It is from this perspective that we have written this article, proposing a reflection on access to data based on two experiences of support services for…

    Open Access•Yoann Doignon, Thierry Eggerickx et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 21

Previous studies have shown that nonmarital cohabitation is socially diffused. However, to our knowledge, no studies exist on spatial aspects of the diffusion. This article examines the spatial diffusion process of nonmarital cohabitation in Belgium
