Quakes, floods, and tourists: A synthetic difference-in-differences approach for Italy
“Natural” disasters can have profound and far-reaching effects across multiple social and economic sectors, with the tourism industry being particularly vulnerable to their disruptive consequences. This study examines the impact of five major disasters, three earthquakes and two floods, that struck Italy between 2009 and 2016. Using the Synthetic Difference-in-Differences (SDID) method, we estimate their effects on disaggregated tourism indicator…
To Return or Not to Return, That Is the Question’: The Role of Health in Return Intentions Among Three Groups of Older Migrants in Italy
The role played by health status in shaping return migration intentions and decisions has received little attention. The few existing studies show conflicting results: poor and deteriorating health can be associated with both higher and lower propensity to return‐migrate, depending on the context. In this paper, we investigate the health‐return nexus for older migrants in Italy. We carry out two analyses. First, we use quantitative survey data to…
Responding to natural disasters: What do monthly remittance data tell us
Identifying the insurance role of remittances against natural disasters through aggregate annual data is challenging due to the dynamics of remittances and disasters throughout the year and possible intertemporal substitution effects. In an event-study setting based on monthly remittance flows from Italy to 81 developing countries for 2005-2015, we investigate their dynamics in the aftermath of disasters. We find that monthly remittances positive…
Subjective well‐being and school outcomes among children of immigrants and natives in Italy
Children of immigrants are generally disadvantaged in terms of educational outcomes in most European countries and this remains true even after controlling for their socioeconomic status. Factors affecting the long‐term educational careers among children of immigrants and natives have been broadly investigated in the literature, although limited attention has been paid so far to the role of subjective well‐being in this context. In this paper, we…
Health spending in Italy: The impact of immigrants
The Impact of Natural Disasters on Remittances to Low- and Middle-Income Countries
In this paper, we offer novel empirical evidence on the impact of natural disasters on remittance flows towards low- and middle-income countries. We consider a panel of 98 countries over the period 1990–2010. Our findings show that remittances increase after a disaster, thus contributing ex post to the reconstruction process. At the same time, we find that remittances play a key role in terms of ex ante risk preparedness for those countries that …
Migration, ethnic concentration and firm entry: Evidence from Italian regions
There is a growing body of literature highlighting the positive contributions of migration and diasporas to economic growth, innovation and productivity. One of the channels facilitating these effects is entrepreneurship. This paper provides novel empirical evidence concerning the link between migration and firm entry across Italian regions during the period 2004–14, and it explores the role of ethnic concentration in this context. The results sh…
Returning to the country of origin in later life: Longitudinal evidence from the German Socio‐Economic Panel
Although migration literature has largely explored the determinants of the intention to return to the country of origin, older migrants have only more recently become the focus of scientific interest. Building on the literature related to return migration, well‐being and ageing, we investigate quantitatively the determinants of return intentions in later life. We draw on longitudinal data from the German Socio‐Economic Panel ( GSOEP ) for the per…
Return intentions over the life course: Evidence on the effects of life events from a longitudinal sample of first- and second-generation Turkish migrants in Germany
Although a growing body of migration literature has focused on the determinants of migrantsâ plans to return to the home country, the role major life events play in return migration intention â including transitions and turning points, key concepts of the
Steady streams and sudden bursts: Persistence patterns in remittance decisions
Remittances and Vulnerability in Developing Countries
This paper examines how international remittances are affected by structural characteristics, macroeconomic conditions, and adverse shocks in both source and recipient economies. The paper exploits a novel, rich panel data set, covering bilateral remittances from 103 Italian provinces to 87 developing countries over the period 2005-2011. Remittances are negatively correlated with the business cycle in recipient countries and increase especially s…
