  • Traveling While Trans

    Open Access•Maureen Outlaw, Maureen C Outlaw et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2026

Airport security involves one of the most ubiquitous identity checks individuals face, and yet there is very little research devoted to the experiences of transgender (trans) people with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). This study attempts to examine the broad experiences of individuals who identify as trans with TSA. It uses the U.S. Transgender Survey (2015) data to gain a better understanding of what interactions members of th…

  • Examining Risk for Sexual Assault Among Bisexuals

    Open Access•Kim S Ménard, Brent Teasdale et al.•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2025

The current study examines rates of victimization by sexual orientation disaggregated by sex (female = 7,972; male = 6,985) using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health data (wave IV). Results from design-adjusted logistic regression analyses indicate bisexual people, regardless of sex, are most at risk for forced sexual assault. While women, especially bisexual women, had higher rates of sexual victimization, differences i…

  • Adult-Onset and Adolescent-Limited Suicidal Ideation

Brent Teasdale, Michelle N Harris et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•2022

Suicidal thoughts and actions have typically been studied from an eventsbased perspective. Some emerging studies, however, have begun to examine suicide and related behaviors through a longitudinal perspective, specifically focusing on establishing trajectories of suicidal behavior. In general, this work produces three-class trajectories of suicide attempts among adolescents, including groups such as: (1) no or low suicidal behavior; (2) moderate…

  • Criminal Justice in Indian Country

    J T Ulmer, Mindy S Bradley•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Criminology•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Examinations of the Native American experience in the US criminal justice system are still relatively sparse, despite earlier calls for increased attention to Native American crime and justice issues. This is unfortunate, as Native Americans are unique among all groups in US society and face distinctive criminal justice jurisdictional complexities. We argue that this uniqueness renders extant racial/ethnic theoretical framings incomplete for unde…

  • Religion, Age, and Crime

    Casey T Harris, Mindy S Bradley et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•2015•References: 17

A growing body of empirical research demonstrates that the relative presence of religious adherents at the community-level has important relationships with rates of crime and violence. Less understood is how adherence to specific religious traditions (e.g., evangelical Protestant, Catholic, mainline Protestant) is associated with rates of crime, especially across particular age groups toward which religious traditions devote varying degrees of st…

  • Deviance and Social Control in an Alternative Community

    Ashleigh E Mckinzie, Mindy S Bradley•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 16

This article employs ethnographic fieldwork and interviews to examine social control and redefined deviance in a utopian countercultural group, The Rainbow Family of Living Light, to answer the question of how socially marginalized groups create and maintain collective identity. Working within a symbolic interactionist paradigm, and drawing on theoretical perspectives on reintegrative shaming, the authors examine the experiences of Rainbow Gather…

  • Race discourse and the US Confederate Flag

Lori Holyfield, Matthew Ryan Moltz et al.•ARTICLE•Race Ethnicity and Education•2009•Cited by: 13•References: 20

Research reveals that racial hierarchies and ‘color‐blind’ racism is maintained through discourse. The current study utilizes exploratory data from focus groups in a predominantly white southern university in the United States to examine race talk, the Confederate Flag, and the construction of southern white identity. Drawing from critical discourse analysis, we answer the following questions: first, to what extent do discursive strategies surrou…

  • Stripping in the New Millennium

    Open Access•Mindy S Bradley•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 22

With the increasing presence of sex and sexuality in American popular culture, the stripping industry is undoubtedly undergoing important subcultural and organizational transition. What are the implications of these changes for the individuals involved? The current paper reviews much of the literature on exotic dance to consider the potential transformations in the organization of the sex industry and how these changes may impact the lives of tho…

  • Girlfriends, Wives, and Strippers

    Mindy S Bradley•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2007•Cited by: 29•References: 25

When romantically involved, exotic dancers must not only manage the negative image of their occupations, but also negotiate conventional relationship norms, including exclusive sexual access. This study investigates the process of partnering among exotic dancers. Interviews with 37 female dancers and 19 male partners reveal that these couples face particular challenges as dancers attempt to balance the expectations of their partners with the dema…

  • Variation in Trial Penalties Among Serious Violent Offenses

    Open Access•J T Ulmer, Mindy S Bradley•ARTICLE•Criminology•2006•Cited by: 34•References: 62

We examine the differences in the sentencing of those who plead guilty and those convicted by jury trial among defendants convicted of serious violent offenses. Drawing from a focal concerns and court communities perspective on court decision making, we develop several hypotheses about jury trial penalties for serious violent offenders, and how such penalties may vary by offense characteristics, defendant characteristics, and court contexts. Our …
