  • Children's Self-Esteem and Parental Support

R B Felson, Mary A Zielinski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1989•Cited by: 9

Longitudinal data are used to estimate the reciprocal relationship between parental support and self-esteem among children in the fifth through eighth grades. The results suggest that parents' supportive behavior-as measured by children's reports-affects the self-esteem of children but that self-esteem also affects how much support children report their parents give them. In addition, parents have a greater effect on the self-esteem of girls than…

  • Elaborating the relationship between age and adolescent cigarette smoking

    Marvin D Krohn, William F Skinner et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•1989•Cited by: 5•References: 32

Previous research has found that the relationship between variables derived from a social control model of deviant behavior are conditional on the age of adolescents. We examine whether the observed age effect on adolescent cigarette use may be due to a cohort or period effect by using multiple cross‐sections from several cohorts of adolescents. We find that basing conclusions about some social control variables on cross‐sectional results may lea…

  • Role Overlap, Network Multiplexity, and Adolescent Deviant Behavior

    Marvin D Krohn, James L Massey et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology Quarterly•1988•Cited by: 13

We introduce the concept of network multiplexity to examine how well structural characteristics of adolescents' social networks explain the variance in adolescent cigarette smoking. Specifically, we examine hypotheses concerning the effect of adolescents' joint participation with both parents and friends, and parents' knowledge of their child's friends, on adolescent cigarette smoking. The data for the analyses are drawn from 1435 ninth-through 1…
