    Open Access•Yann P M Rees, Armin Küchler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•2026

This study investigates the role of digital information and communication technologies (DICT) in the context of social cohesion and trust (SCT) at the community level. The analysis is grounded in the assumption that SCT underpins both social capital and the capacity for collective action in communities. Employing a comparative design, survey data were collected from residents of four villages ( n = 706) and four urban districts ( n = 1031) in Ger…

  • Radicalizing spaces

Open Access•Sebastian Kurtenbach, Armin Küchler et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2025

This study examines neighbourhood effects and their impact on inhabitants’ susceptibility to radicalization by linking standardized survey data in three German cities to data from government statistics, followed by a multilevel analysis from a total of 145 units. This allows us to control for both local and individual factors with respect to the susceptibility to radicalization. Findings show that an increased level of self-control and income sat…

  • Prevention of Neighborhood Effects on the Susceptibility to Radicalization

    Open Access•Sebastian Kurtenbach, Armin Küchler et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 13

This study examines whether the neighborhood effect on vulnerability to radicalization can be mitigated by the density and diversity of social service organizations. In this study, vulnerability to radicalization is composed of perceived discrimination, distrust of democracy, and authoritarianism. To this end, data from surveys conducted in the three German cities of Dortmund ( n = 1,900), Bonn ( n = 1,986), and Berlin ( n = 2,060) is combined wi…

  • ‘I fear only the neighbourhood and the Lord!’ Youth violence in marginalized spaces

    Open Access•Sebastian Kurtenbach•ARTICLE•European Journal of Criminology•2023

Male juveniles in segregated poor neighbourhoods are at increased risk of violence. The code of the street approach is commonly used to understand the context informing street violence in such marginalized spaces, but the concept is mainly used in Western countries, especially in African American communities in the US. This study investigates whether the code of the street is also applicable to the largest Roma neighbourhood in Europe, located in…

  • Towards Digital Social Infrastructure? Digital Neighborly Connectedness as a Social Resource

    Open Access•Yann P M Rees, Sebastian Kurtenbach et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Planning•2022

Social infrastructure is made up of various material as well as non-material goods, ranging from venues for leisure such as movie theaters to indispensable everyday commodities, like sidewalks and streets. This is true both for urban and rural areas. However, the increasing emergence of digital aspects of social infrastructure has seemed to go unnoticed to some extent, with research specifically focusing on these digital aspects of social infrast…

Rolf G Heinze, Rabea Bieckmann et al.•ARTICLE•Forschungsjournal Soziale…•2021

  • Global Street Code. A Cross-cultural Perspective on Youth Violence

Sebastian Kurtenbach, Steffen Zdun et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 29

Some twenty years ago Anderson’s seminal work, The Code of the Street, was published. The theoretical approach he developed there has been used in numerous studies focusing on youth violence, and is now treated as a general explanation of youth violence in risky neighborhoods in a number of disciplines. Expanding this, an international research project has used the concepts to compare violence-related norms and beliefs of male juveniles between 1…

Jeffrey Ian Ro, Jeffrey Ian Ross et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Research & Practice•2020

Scholarly fields are meant to be dynamic to accommodate new information that is infused with old. One of these areas is the notion, subject, subfield and process of street culture. Despite the frequency of its usage in the social sciences, urban planning, and selected areas of the visual arts, rarely is the term street culture defined and when it is, the definitions are often conceptually lacking. This article synthesizes current ideas about the …

There has hardly been any other development that has changed our everyday lives as significantly as digitalisation, and there is hardly anything as commonplace as neighbourship. Despite the links between these two concepts growing, they have been neglected in social science research in Germany so far. The prevailing sentiment is that the Internet and social media sites have no connection to the real world, but there are countless neighbourship gr…
