The (Armed) Elephants in the Room
This article discusses the impact of the presence of Correctional Officers in the Inside-Out Prison Exchange classroom. The Inside-Out model brings “traditional” college students together with students who are incarcerated for a shared learning environment and experience. In most cases, Correctional Officers are not in the room where the class occurs; however, this article discusses the drawbacks and benefits that can result from having Officers …
Decolonizing Faculty Governance at Hispanic Serving Institutions
While there has been an emphasis within the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) literature on decentralizing university governance to allow for antiracist decision-making, there has been less focus on the lack of inclusive representation within faculty governance, particularly for historically excluded groups. Guided by testimonio as methodology and examples from our lived experiences within one small Catholic HSI, we offered five tenets of a deco…
The Social Construction of Arab Identity in the U.S
This paper presents the sociopolitical experiences of early Arab migrants in the United States (U.S.) and the process of contradictory and socially constructed racial categorizations favoring white supremacy. While there is much discourse of the racial formation of Arab immigrants since 9-11, the actual racial project started in the early twentieth century, through varies entities including the social work profession where the “othering” process …
But He Can't Be Gay”
In this article I explore how the father-son relationship impacts both the nature and extent of homophobia in men, specifically the difference in homophobic feelings a father has for his gay son compared to the homophobic feelings a son has for his gay father. The effect of masculinity, specifically hegemonic masculinity, on homophobia in men is well-documented and my goal is to continue this further given the role that fathers play in socializin…
Old and Young Dogs Teaching Each Other Tricks
This article covers the importance of creating and developing agency in community partners when engaging in community-based learning. Often when faculty incorporate service- or community-based learning into their classes, we measure the “learning” part but not the “service” or “community.” Focusing more on the latter involves working “with” community partners instead of working “for” community partners, and this focus creates a more effective exp…
When Screams Are Not Released
This study examines the importance of modes of communication in the context of acquaintance rape, using 96 reported cases of acquaintance rape from a southeastern law enforcement agency. Through the demographic characteristics of each acquaintance rape, as well as the testimonies of the complainants and—in some cases—the accused, this research reveals the way in which victims communicate their responses to these attacks. A typology of modes of co…
General Issue (G.I.) Strain
This article explores possible causes of military offending through application of strain theory to a small sample of current U.S. Army personnel. The military provides a unique social environment given the organization and culture of the institution. Criminal behavior of those inside this institution has recently received much media attention, yet has not received much academic attention. Prior research focuses on military-specific crimes and/or…
Socioeconomic Status, Economic Problems, and Delinquency
Research indicates that the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and delinquency is not as strong as suggested by the leading crime theories. This article argues that such theories do not predict that SES in and of itself causes delinquency but rather that the economic problems associated with SES cause delinquency. Such problems include substantial changes in lifestyle due to lack of money and the inability to purchase needed goods an…
