  • La lenteur ou la vie à haute intensité

    Charles Wright•ARTICLE•Inflexions•2025

Intensity is one of the great expectations of contemporary society. Monotony, automatism and existential platitudes must be avoided at all costs. To be successful, life must be ruled by constant excitement, variation and movement. In every aspect of life, we must go further, higher, faster and accomplish more in less time. Yet, we cannot live in a constant state of frenzy. The frenetic pace of social change, technological developments and the rhy…

  • The command economy as an adaptive structure

    Open Access•Richard E Hilbert, Charles R Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Classical Sociology•2017

We open with a discussion of the Parsonian solution to the 'problem of order' in human societies, emphasising the functional significance of 'adaptive structures' in that solution. Adaptive structures adapt the dominant structure of a society to the realistic conditions of its existence. We then argue that the Command Economy of World War II is an example of an adaptive structure in that it adapted the American system of free-enterprise capitalis…

Last SupperI seem to have come to the end of something, but don't know what, Full moon blood orange just over the top of the redbud tree.Maundy Thursday tomorrow, then Good Friday, then Easter in full drag, Dogwood blossoms like little crosses All down the street, lilies and jonquils bowing their mitred heads.Perhaps it's a sentimentality about such fey things, But I don't think so.One knows There is no end to the other world, no matter where it …

Seyla Benhabib's critique of Jürgen Habermas's moral theory claims that his approach is not adequate for the needs of a feminist moral theory. I argue that her analysis is mistaken. I also show that Habermas's moral theory, properly understood, satisfies many of the conditions identified by feminist moral philosophers as necessary for an adequate moral theory. A discussion of the compatibility between the model of reciprocal perspective taking fo…

  • Reasons for Not Reporting Peak Experiences

Open Access•John Davis, Linda Lockwood et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•1991•Cited by: 8•References: 4

Respondents reported on whether they had had a peak experience, how many people they had told, and the reasons they had not told more people. Out of 246 respondents, 79% reported having had a peak experience but most had told only a few people about it. The most common reasons respondents gave for not discussing a peak experience were that it was a special and intimate personal experience which they did not want to discuss, that they felt it migh…

  • Predicting intolerance

    Alan C Acock, Charles W Wright et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•1981•Cited by: 1•References: 17

The impact of parental intolerance, social class, and religious fundamentalism on the level of tolerance of post‐adolescent children is assessed on a sample of 205 mother‐father‐child triads. Social class plays an indirect role, and religious fundamentalism is shown to be the primary mechanism for the intergenerational transmission of intolerance. The concept of intolerance is extended so as to focus on reactions to deviant behavior. There is lit…

  • Sir Raymond Priestley

    Open Access•Charles Wright•ARTICLE•Polar Record•1974

There are many young people in New Zealand, in Australia, here in Canada, and especially those who knew him in Cambridge, in Birmingham, and in his home town of Tewkesbury, who will mourn the passing of Sir Raymond Priestley as friend and counsellor. I think it is fitting that I should write my tribute to his sterling qualities, since I have known him for 64 long years as a friend, as a collaborator and, for 60 years, as a relation by marriage wi…
