A Gendered Bystander Effect
Which gender is more vulnerable to human trafficking recruitment, and does a bystander from the community reduce situational vulnerability? Moving away from the passive victim framework, we hypothesise that vulnerability to an exploitative overseas job-offer can be rational, vary by gender, and be moderated by the situational social influence of another person. Building on rational choice and the literature on irregular labour migration, we condu…
Situational Action Theory and the particular case of settings including a group
Situational Action Theory (SAT) postulates that personal crime propensity and the setting’s criminogenic features are direct causes of crime. This perspective also places a central focus on the moral factors involved. The moral norms of settings have not yet been exhaustively examined in regard to the aspects that may influence them. This theoretical article applies SAT to the particular case of settings including a group. Building upon previous …
Ethnic discrimination in neighborhood ingroup-outgroup encounters
Research on discriminating behavior against ethnic minorities in everyday situations is still a rather under-researched field, since most prior research on ethnic discrimination focuses on housing markets, job markets, criminal justice, institutions or discourses. This article contributes toward filling the research-gap on everyday discrimination by bringing together prior research from sociology and social-psychology, including threat and compet…
Good People Commit Bad Deeds Together
This article empirically tests the theoretical proposition that moral norms of groups can be the reason why “good” people sometimes do “the wrong thing.” The issue is approached from the perspective of Wikström’s Situational Action Theory (SAT). SAT posits that criminal acts are the result of features of the person and the setting. Building on this, the hypotheses forwarded are: The higher the morality of a person and the general moral norms of a…
Ethical Decisions between the Conflicting Priorities of Legality and Group Loyalty
In this study, we examine volunteer firefighters' inclination toward a "code of silence". The likelihood of not reporting fellow group members' deviant behavior is increased by group standards such as loyalty, but this comes at the cost of violating the law. A factorial survey was conducted with volunteer firefighters in Germany to test the influence of several factors in determining whether whistleblowing or conforming to a "code of silence" was…
