  • Small-Scale Marijuana Growing

Craig Boylstein, Scott R Maggard•ARTICLE•Humboldt Journal of Social…•2022•Cited by: 1

Previous research on marijuana growers in the United States has primarily focused on those who have been incarcerated for the activity (Weisheit, 1990; 1998). These growers tend to produce large amounts of the product. It may be that large scale marijuana growers who have been arrested may differ in their reasons for growing, their style of growing and distributing and in how they view marijuana growing as an activity from different types of grow…

  • The Impact of Victimization, Mental Health Problems, and Disabilities on Juvenile Justice Processing

    Open Access•Allison T Chappell, Scott R Maggard•ARTICLE•Crime & Delinquency•2021

Victimization, mental health problems, and disabilities are associated with an increased likelihood of delinquent behavior, and girls in the juvenile justice system report higher rates of past trauma and victimization, sexual abuse, and mental health issues than boys. However, the influence of these problems on juvenile justice processing remains understudied. This study investigated the impact of victimization, mental health problems, disabiliti…

  • From 'Just Say No' to 'I Didn't Inhale' to We Have 'Bigger Fish to Fry

    Richard J Stringer, Scott R Maggard•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 54

Public opinion concerning marijuana legalization has varied greatly over time. While prior research suggests presidential drug rhetoric is related to public opinions on drugs, the relationship between the sitting president and attitudes specifically toward marijuana has not been explored. This study utilized data from the General Social Survey and the American Presidency Project to examine the relationship between the president and Americans’ att…

  • Changing Masks

    Scott R Maggard, Craig Boylstein•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 19

Utilizing ethnographic field observations as well as face-to-face interviews, this article explores nuances of identity management among a small, intimate group of indoor marijuana growers. Findings suggest that some who are involved in marijuana cultivation may have multiple, distinct deviant identities or “masks.” These “masks” are called on depending on the audience and situation that each participant is presented with. Further, we show that t…

  • Factors that Impede or Facilitate Post-Conflict Justice Mechanisms

    Dawn L Rothe, Scott R Maggard•ARTICLE•International Criminal Law Review•2012•Cited by: 1

This article provides an overview of post-conflict justice (PCJ) as well as a detailed analysis of factors that impede or facilitate the implementation of mechanisms to address the atrocities of a conflict. Grounded in an extensive new dataset, developed over the past three years, covering all conflicts in Africa between 1946 and 2009, we extend previous research by including empirical testing of previously untested assumptions and variables impa…

  • Attitudes toward capital punishment

    Open Access•Scott R Maggard, Brian K Payne et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 6

Studying attitudes toward capital punishment has been a topic of interest for decades. Indeed, it is often the subject of Gallup polls, political commentary, and social science research. Research indicates that attitudes vary by demographic factors, educational influences, and neighborhood crime rates. Building on prior research, the current study examined death penalty attitudes among 599 college students and 213 residents from high crime and lo…

  • A Theoretical Investigation of Public Attitudes Toward Sex Education

    Allison T Chappell, Scott R Maggard et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Spectrum•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Rates of teen pregnancy in the United States are significantly higher than those in most other industrialized nations. This is troubling in light of the consequences to teen mothers, their children, and society. Some suggest that teen pregnancies can be decreased by providing sex education in the public school system, while others believe that sex education is inappropriate for public school. Little research exists, however, on predictors of atti…
