  • Bycatch trend and its fate of the Spanish-owned tuna purse seiners fleet from the Atlantic and Indian oceans

    Open Access•Sergio Acevedo-Iglesias, Miguel Herrera et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2025

This study examines the fate of species caught as bycatch in the tropical tuna purse seine fishery across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans from 2003 to 2022, focusing on the impact of the industry-implemented Code of Good Practices (CGP) and bycatch mitigation measures from Tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (t-RFMOs). Data were sourced from scientific observers under both Spain’s National Data Collection Framework (DCF, Regulation (E…

  • Estimating illegal catches in data-poor S-fisheries

    Open Access•Hugo Martínez-Ballesteros, Hugo M Ballesteros et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2024

The opaque nature of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing means that the data on catches are scarce or unreliable, making it difficult to estimate the volume of illegal fishing and the number of individuals who practice it. In this work, we develop the use of quantification methods for IUU fishing in data-poor fisheries and provide estimates for the main shellfish species exploited in S-fisheries in Galicia (NW Spain). To make the e…

  • A Classification of Poachers from the Sea

    Hugo Martínez-Ballesteros, Gonzalo Rodríguez-Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2023•References: 18

The poaching of marine resources has been defined as the conscious breaking of fishery regulations, a situation that occurs at severe levels and high frequencies in many socio-ecological contexts around the world. A classification of poachers is fundamental to defining the actors and the scale of poaching. However, proper classification of poachers has yet to be designated, hindering the development of management approaches that seek to recognize…

  • The use of a spatial model of economic efficiency to predict the most likely outcomes under different fishing strategy scenarios

    Open Access•Raul Vilela, Maria G Pennino et al.•ARTICLE•Marine Policy•2021

  • The Fewer Insider Poachers, the More Normative Compliance

    Hugo Martínez-Ballesteros, Gonzalo Rodríguez-Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 51

Shellfish poaching is an act of noncompliance with the laws that regulate fisheries governance. In this paper we explored if compliance with shellfishing laws among Galician licensed shellfish-gatherers (NW Spain) is voluntary or motivated by coercive factors. The results reveal that in those communities with a greater degree of compliance, licensed shellfish-gatherers do not poach and comply with the rules voluntarily. The conditions in these co…

  • Economic Crisis and Poaching

    Hugo Martínez-Ballesteros, Hugo M Ballesteros et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 46

The aim of this work is to prove the significant relationship between the economic crisis and the increase of the shellfish poaching in Galicia (NW Spain) during the period 2008–2012. A relationship was observed between the "necessity" causes and the economic incentives as an explanation for shellfish poaching. The results achieved pointing out the importance to complete the coercive dissuasive methods in the fight against poaching using informal…
