Social Support and Service Use Among Homeless Persons With Serious Mental Illness
It has been widely hypothesized that persons with greater social support use fewer health care services, although previous studies have shown variable results. This study examines the relationship between levels of social support and formal service use among clients entering 18 community treatment programs for homeless persons with serious mental illness as part of the ACCESS demonstration project of the U.S. Center for Mental Health Services. Ba…

Sampling methods and admissions of sexual aggression among college men
Most research on the causes of the sexually aggressive behavior of nonincarcerated men uses college student samples. To examine potential biases associated with different sampling methods, we compare self‐reports of male sexual aggression from studies using random samples to those using classroom volunteers. Fewer men in the random samples admitted to sexual aggression. Several explanations for these results are considered, and an experiment is p…
Sorting Out the Cuckoo's Nest
Research relevant to understanding how mental illness is popularly conceptualized owes much to the methods pioneered by Star in 1950. However, while her six vignettes have been used extensively over the last 30 years to test the public's ability to recognize mental illness, subsequent research has provided little insight into which factors contribute most to the judgment process. This study introduces a factorial survey research method that is mo…
Type of Structure, Satisfaction and Propensity To Move
This paper is an examination of the effect of type of structure on housing satisfaction and propensity to move. A national probability sample is used to compare the satisfaction levels of residents of single-family homes, mobile homes, apartments, multi-family and rowhouse dwellings. In addition to structure-type, the effects of tenure, housing quality and neighborhood satisfaction are examined. Sociodemographic characteristics of the household a…
The Distinction Between Social Distance and Stereotyping
An analysis of survey data from a large city in the Southwest shows that social distance and stereotyping are distinct components of prejudice in white attitudes toward both blacks and American Indians. Further, whites perceive more social distance between themselves and blacks than between themselves and Indians. There is evidence of a smaller difference in the levels of stereotyping of Indians and blacks by whites
