Program data for studying Policing and militarization: An open-source database in response to the recommendations of Koslicki (2023)
The 1033 Program involves the transfer of military equipment to law enforcement agencies across the United States. The Program allows law enforcement unparalleled access to a variety of military equipment for discretionary use. Owing to issues of data, not much is known about the impact of 1033 on relevant law enforcement strategies and outcomes; including how much equipment an agency has, how the equipment is used, and the impacts of the equipme…
An Examination of the Intersectional Experience of Incarcerated Parents
Data from the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, consisting of 9,262 incarcerated parents, were used to explore patterns of anger, with a particular focus on understanding the interplay between emotional distress and other predictors of anger among incarcerated parents through the lens of General Strain Theory. Through a conjunctive analysis of case configurations (CACC), results from the current study show that …

Navigating Student Resistance in the Classroom: Challenges and Strategies for Female Faculty
The #Me Too movement has called attention to the importance of sexism in experiencing mistreatment in a number of professions. In this paper, we explore the experiences of female college instructors navigating problematic student behaviors, such as interruptions and challenges to classroom management. Drawing on a survey of instructors at U.S. colleges and universities, we outline patterns in problematic student behaviors reported by instructors.…
Gender Differences in Reactions to Mental Illness Labeling: The Role of Agency and Communion
Numerous individual characteristics influence responses to receiving a mental health diagnosis, including gender. This study sought to determine how gender influences reactions to being labeled as depressed or not depressed, which were categorized as falling into themes of communion or agency. Using the themes developed by Niedzwienska (2003), 168 college students’ responses to depression labels were coded as a part of a laboratory experiment. Th…
Emotions in criminological theory: Insights from social psychology
A number of scholars have noted that emotional processes have been undertheorized in criminology. Although criminologists have explored how various emotions facilitate or inhibit crime, few formal theories of crime clearly address the role of emotional processes. Sociological theories of emotions provide a number of insights that criminologists might find useful to help fill the gaps in criminological explanations of offending. We illustrate the …
Parental Status, Child Contact, and Well-Being Among Incarcerated Men and Women
Using the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State and Federal Correctional Facilities, we examine the association between parenthood and distress and anger among the currently incarcerated. We show how variations in the parenting experience-such as amount of child contact-influence the mental health of incarcerated parents and how these relationships vary by gender. Our analysis indicates that parents who are incarcerated are significantly more distresse…
