Navigating the Moral Landscape of Foster Care
Foster care provides a family‐like upbringing for children who cannot stay with their biological parents for various reasons. While the practice of paying foster parents is not questioned, the level of the fee and how it is spent (or not spent) are morally charged matters. Foster parents’ motives may be questioned by the media, neighbors, or social workers, who may suspect financial gain. Although these payments are essential and may be crucial t…

"Producing People" in Documents and Meetings in Human Service Organizations
This thematic issue is devoted to how human service work may be influenced by accentuated administrative processes, as well as reinforced by digitalization, in contemporary society. The public sector has expanded the requirements of documentation, auditing and evaluation practices. Policy, problems and persons are shaped and enacted in meetings and documents. Meetings and documents comprise the forum for making highly important decisions for the …

State governing of knowledge’ – constraining social work research and practice
Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been launched, spread, and established in social work in Sweden in the last decade. Today, impact studies and ‘what works’ are the recommended approaches, and medical ways to understand and examine social problems thus are prioritised over the broad social science perspectives on which social work rests. This development has culminated in an institutionalised system called ‘state governing of knowledge’. We analy…

And how old are you?”
Struggling for One’s Name
Under scrutiny (what we term a “bribery gaze”), many interpersonal exchanges in work contexts are perceived as bribes rather than gifts, tokens of appreciation, or mundane favors. Current Swedish bribery laws are strong, and the media keep a vigilant eye out for suspicious activities. From a wide set of qualitative data, we selected 13 interviews with formally-accused middle managers and low-level officials in Sweden who claimed to be innocent of…
The Crisis Model
The model of “crisis” is a culturally shared and widespread idea of human reactions to misfortunes such as accidents, diagnosis of disease, divorces, becoming a parent of a disabled child, and so on. The crisis model conveys the idea of coming to terms with unwanted experiences while advancing through various phases, for example, of denial, processing, and acceptance. The language of crises is integrated into Western emotional culture, particular…
Categories by Heart
This article examines the practice of doctors and nurses to invoke the categories of age, sex, class, ethnicity, and/or lifestyle factors when discussing individual patients and patient groups. In what situations are such references explicitly made, and what does this practice accomplish? The material consists of field notes from a cardiology clinic in Sweden, and a theory of descriptive practice guided the analysis. When professionals describe p…
Introduction to the Special Issue
Interviewees with an agenda
Social constructionists consider interviews as mutually co-constructing meaning. But what if the interlocutors do not seem to agree on what they construct? What if the interviewee has a particularly strong agenda, far from the intended research topic? Are these 'failed' interviews? We address this issue using a 'deviant' interview in a study of 'being a neighbour'. First, we add to the discussion of interviewees' category representativeness by ac…
Accounts of Honesty
This article investigates the stories told by Swedish men charged with bribery. The interviews are drawn from a study of court cases relating to bribery. White-collar criminals often justify their actions with reference to business culture: ‘‘Everyone’s doing it.’’ In this study, when refuting alle- gations, interviewees also invoke a ‘‘folk logic of bribery,’’ thus making use of mainstream cultural resources. Received ideas of a ‘‘real’’ bribe i…
Expressing and Examining Morality in Everyday Life
Social comparisons, seeing oneself in relation to others, are universal, common, and perhaps even necessary. In a study of parents of deaf children, intense, open, and mutual examinations were voiced in parental groups, meetings between parents and professionals, and interviews. These comparisons were generated in a specific situation created by successful claims for separate milieus advocated by the Deaf movement. The local culture, “the deaf wo…
We can’t just do it any which way” – Objectivity Work among Swedish Prosecutors
Objectivity is a principle widely acknowledged and honoured in contemporary society. Rather than treating objectivity as an a priori defined category to be tested empirically, I refer to the construction of objectivity as it is accomplished in practice as “objectivity work” and consider how Swedish prosecutors in interviews make and communicatively realize (i.e. “make real”) its claims. In analyzing two facets of objectivity work – maintaining ob…
Vi kan inte göra hipp som happ
The claim that politics, economics, and personal and social values are relevant in judicial decision making is not new. However, a shared view among legal practitioners tends to be that most cases are decided in an objective fashion. Drawing on material from two different studies (one on battered women and one on bribery), this paper investigates how prosecutors rely on and actively uphold an institutional discourse portraying the law and legal p…
Villains, Fools and Heroes
During the last two decades, the teaching of deaf students in Sweden has been characterised by a change of ideology. The aim of this study is to elucidate the consequences of this alteration on teachers of deaf students. Teachers whose training took place a good many years ago and is now held to be 'wrong' are working alongside younger colleagues, who were trained according to an instruction method rooted in the ideology now considered to be 'rig…
