Through Pluripolarity to Socialism
The International Manifesto Group launched its manifesto, “Through Pluripolarity to Socialism” on 5 September 2021. Then, the world’s attention was riveted to the US’s ignominious exit from Afghanistan. The following speeches, delivered at the webinar to mark the first anniversary of the event, reflect on the tumultuous events of the year since, dominated by the US-led war on Russia, using Ukraine as a proxy, its wider international reverberation…
John Birks
We describe the career of John Birks as a pioneering scientist who has, over a career spanning five decades, transformed palaeoecology from a largely descriptive to a rigorous quantitative science relevant to contemporary questions in ecology and environmental change. We review his influence on students and colleagues not only at Cambridge and Bergen Universities, his places of primary employment, but also on individuals and research groups in Eu…
Rural Elected Officials, Environmental Policy, and Economic Composition
This research uses an alternative economic composition methodology that classifies 52 Idaho rural communities. This methodology classifies communities as dependent, diversified, or post‐industrial. A survey was mailed to elected officials (mayors and city council) from the sample of 52 rural communities to examine whether there is a relationship between environmental policy support and economic type. One hundred and thirty‐three respondents (48%)…
Accelerated Aging and Male Homosexuality
The evidence of research looking at accelerated aging among gay men is contradictory. In this study the issue of accelerated aging is addressed by accounting for the duality of the gay man's lifestyle as he interacts in both the homosexual community and the larger society where heterosexuality is the presumed norm. The onset of middle and old age as self-perceived by gay men and as perceived by other gay men in the homosexual subculture is contra…
Toward a Social Deficit Model of Ageing
The popular conception of ageing as a time of increasing deficiency, supported by a biological decline model, is criticized on both methodological and theoretical grounds. Recent research pertaining to misconceptions about ageing is examined. Regressive changes in the latter part of the life‐span appear to reflect environmental or experiential deficits rather than intrinsic ageing phenomena. Manipulative rather than descriptive research is sugges…
