  • Nova spoznanja o veliki semiurbani poznoantični utrjeni naselbini Sv. Pavel nad Vrtovinom

Sondiranja v letu 1966 so potrdila obstoj poznoantične utrjene naselbine in nakazala gosto poselitev v njenem severnem delu. Lidarsko skeniranje površja, terenski obhodi in različni zračni posnetki so v zadnjem času razkrili poleg številnih manjših enoprostornih hiš na severni polovici platoja še veliko…

  • Bronze chandeliers from Vipota (Slovenia) and the decline of the churches of Celeia

Slavko Ciglenečki, Zvezdana Modrijan•ARTICLE•Hortus Artium Medievalium•2020

Bronze chandeliers and candlesticks represent one of the crucial elements of lighting in churches from the late Roman period onwards. Both forms of ecclesiastical lighting equipment have been found as a hoard of bronze objects at the late antique hilltop settlement Vipota in present-day Slovenia. The hoard consists of at least 6, maybe even 7 Christograms, their parts and other bronze objects. All objects are dated in the Late Roman period, more …

The monograph presents the results of two-year excavations (1982 and 1983) on the late-antique fortified hilltop settlement Korinjski hrib above Veliki Korini in Suha Krajina, where the remains of five defence towers and an early Christian church were explored. The settlement was initially recognized as a military post and as such represented an exception in the Eastern Alpine area. Such a definition raised some doubts and dilemmas. These dilemma…

  • Late Traces of the Cults of Cybele and Attis. The Origins of the Kurenti and of the Pinewood Marriage (“Borovo Gostüvanje”) Pozni sledovi Kibelinega in Atisovega kulta. O izvoru kurentov in borovega g…

    Open Access•Slavko Ciglenečki•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2015

The carnival mask of the kurent invokes the memory of the mythical companions of Cybele and Attis, who played an important role directly before Christianity became the prevailing religion throughout the territory of present-day Slovenia. It also seems that pinewood marriage (“borovo gostüvanje”), an event that takes place during the carnival festivities, reflects one of the high points of the March celebrations dedicated to Attis. The author furt…

  • The Changing Relations Between City and Countryside in Late Antique Illyricum

    Slavko Ciglenečki•ARTICLE•Hortus Artium Medievalium•2014

The paper presents the problem of transformation of Late Antique towns in Illyricum. Apart from the continuity of some urban centres a number of different transformation processes can be distinguished; from complete decay and abandonment or radical decrease and pauperisation of town areas to the last new foundations of strongly transformed urban sites. These transformations must be observed in relation to the contemporary countryside settlement p…

    Open Access•Slavko Ciglenečki•BOOK•Tinje nad Loko pri Žusmu / Tinje…•2000

One of the most important and largest Late Roman and Early Medieval sites in the eastern Alpine region is presented in this book. Two seasons of rescue excavations have illuminated the appearance of this densely inhabited settlement, which was occupied, perhaps only with minor breaks, from the 4th- 9th centuries AD. Seven partially destroyed wooden houses, a completely preserved stone cult structure, and part of a Late Roman child cemetery have e…
