  • Wasserfrauen auf Abwegen

Elisabeth Lechner, Stefan Simonek et al.•ARTICLE•Studia Slavica Academiae…•2017

Sirens became an essential element of the literary imagination in many European literatures in Romanticism and have remained popular ever since. Also, in Russian and Polish culture, the image of the dangerously alluring and transgressive female nymph called “rusalka” is omnipresent. In this paper, the authors use a comparative approach to trace the evolution of the “rusalka” motif from its creation in the Romantic period to its transformed (and o…

  • La ballata Topolja di Taras Ševčenko. Una prospettiva comparatistica

    Open Access•Stefan Simonek•ARTICLE•Studi Slavistici•2016

The paper offers a short analysis of the main subject in Taras Ševčenko’s famous ballad Topolja from 1839; in the ballad, a young girl forced to marry an older man by her own mother asks nature for help and, eventually, finds herself turned into a slim poplar. In Ukrainian philology, Ševčenko’s poetic masterpiece was initially compared to similar subjects in Ukrainian folk songs. Ivan Franko, however, already in 1890 also mentioned ancient Greek …

  • The Empire Writes Back—Writing Back to the Empire

    Stefan Simonek•ARTICLE•East Central Europe•2016•References: 2

  • Westliche Elemente von Pop- und Konsumkultur in der ukrainischen Gegenwartsliteratur (Zur Problematik des Kontextwechsels)

    Open Access•Stefan Simonek•ARTICLE•Studi Slavistici•2014

The paper offers a close reading of three Ukrainian novels by Yuri Andrukhovych, Serhiy Zhadan, and Lyubko Deresh in order to demonstrate, how main elements of Western pop-culture are shifted into a different Central and East European context. As a result, it becomes clear that contem- porary Ukrainian fiction uses these elements, but does by no way intend simply to imitate Western traditions of pop-culture; on the contrary, Western pop-culture i…

    Stefan Simonek•ARTICLE•Studia Slavica Academiae…•2008

The essay presents hitherto unpublished letters from Josef Svatopluk Machar, Zenon Przesmycki and Hermann Bahr, which are focussing on the Viennese weekly “Die Zeit”, edited by Bahr between 1894 and 1899. The correspondence between Bahr and the Czech writer and critic Machar shows up the dense modernist network, which came up due to Machar’s regular contributions to Bahr’s journal. This network was based on a mutual benefit, since both critics by…
