  • The Carnation Revolution and economic crisis

Open Access•Luciano Amaral, Bruno Lopes Marques et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2026

On 25 April 1974, the “Carnation Revolution” toppled Western Europe's oldest dictatorship, Portugal's Estado Novo . Political instability ensued, leading to a wage explosion, expropriations, and the collapse of an empire that brought back half a million repatriates. As a result, the Portuguese economy slowed from the high growth it had experienced in the 1950s and ’60s. However, disentangling the effects of the revolution from those of the broade…

  • European funds and firm performance

Open Access•José Mesquita, Jacqueline Pithan Dos Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2025

This paper examines the impact of European Union (EU) funds on the performance of private firms. We exploit a quasi-natural experiment arising from an administrative redrawing of geographical boundaries, which led to a discrete change in regional eligibility. This caused a sudden and substantial increase in access to EU grants directed at firms located in 33 Portuguese municipalities. Using a comprehensive linked employer-employee administrative …

  • Nobody’s gonna slow me down? The effects of a transportation cost shock on firm performance and behavior

Open Access•Catarina Branco, Catarina Aguiar Branco et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Economics•2023•References: 69

We study the firm-level responses to a substantial increase in transportation costs in the wake of a quasi-experiment that introduced tolls in a subset of Portuguese highways. Exploiting a unique dataset encompassing the universe of Portuguese private firms, we find that the introduction of tolls caused a substantial decrease in turnover (−10.2%) and productivity (−4.3%) in treated firms vis-à-vis firms in the comparison group. In response to the…

  • Regional and sectorial impacts of the Covid‐19 crisis

Open Access•Bruno P Carvalho, Samantha Peralta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2022

We use novel and comprehensive monthly data on electronic payments, by municipality and sector, together with cash withdrawals, to study the impact of Covid‐19 in Portugal. Our difference‐in‐differences event study identifies a causal decrease of 17 and 40 percentage points on the year‐on‐year growth rate of overall purchases in March and April 2020. We document a stronger impact of the crisis in more central and more urban municipalities, due to…

  • For whom the bell tolls

Open Access•Alfredo M Pereira, Rui Marvão Pereira et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Infrastructure Policy…•2021

We present a difference-in-differences analysis of the road safety effects of introducing tolls on SCUT highways in Portugal, a policy motivated purely by financial considerations, as congestion was never an issue. Using negative binomial count models and a comprehensive dataset on all mainland municipalities covering 2008 to 2014, we find that introducing tolls led to an increase in the total numbers of accidents and road injuries in municipalit…

  • Collateral Damage? Labour Market Effects of Competing with China—at Home and Abroad

    Open Access•Sónia Cabral, Pedro S Martins et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 37

The increasing range and quality of China's exports is a major development internationally with potentially far‐reaching effects. In this paper, on top of the direct labour market effects of imports from China studied in previous research, we also measure the indirect effects stemming from increased export competition in third markets. Our findings, based on matched employer–employee data of Portugal covering the period 1991–2008, indicate that w…

  • The effects of highway tolls on private business activity—results from a natural experiment

    Open Access•David B Audretsch, Dirk Dohse et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The article studies the impact of a switch from free to charged highway provision on firm numbers and private sector employment in a panel of Portuguese municipalities covering the period 2007–2013. It exploits the fact that tolls on certain highways in Portugal were unexpectedly introduced in reaction to the sovereign debt crisis to establish causality. Findings suggest that the price of highway tolls in terms of forgone employment and firm form…

  • More than just numbers

Open Access•Jacqueline Pithan Dos Santos, Mariana Tavares et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2016

Suicides are a major concern for public health first and foremost because they are an avoidable cause of death. Moreover, they can be an indicator of self-reported emotional satisfaction and a good marker of overall well-being. In this study we examine how different economic and social aspects affected Portuguese suicide rates for more than one hundred years (1910-2013). We place this exercise in the specific historical context of the XX and earl…
