The Deep Learning Revolution in AI
The early development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the latter half of the twentieth century was marked by limited, hand-crafted systems and fluctuating perceptions of the field’s potential. Early research explored a range of paradigms – including symbolic, neural and probabilistic approaches – constrained by severe hardware and data limitations. Key technological advances, such as the invention of microchips, GPUs and later TPUs, significan…

Type-theoretic logic with an operational account of intensionality
We formulate a Curry-typed logic with fine-grained intensionality within Turner’s typed predicate logic. This allows for an elegant presentation of a theory that corresponds to Fox and Lappin’s property theory with curry typing, but without the need for a federation of languages. We then consider how the fine-grained intensionality of this theory can be given an operational interpretation. This interpretation suggests itself as expressions in the…

Classifying Non-Sentential Utterances in Dialogue: A Machine Learning Approach
In this article we use well-known machine learning methods to tackle a novel task, namely the classification of non-sentential utterances (NSUs) in dialogue. We introduce a fine-grained taxonomy of NSU classes based on corpus work, and then report on the results of several machine learning experiments. First, we present a pilot study focused on one of the NSU classes in the taxonomy—bare wh-phrases or “sluices”—and explore the task of disambiguat…
Machine learning theory and practice as a source of insightinto universal grammar
In this paper, we explore the possibility that machine learning approaches to natural-language processing being developed in engineering-oriented computational linguistics may be able to provide specific scientific insights into the nature of human language. We argue that, in principle, machine learning results could inform basic debates about language, in one area at least, and that in practice, existing results may offer initial tentative suppo…

Generalized Quantifiers, Exception Phrases, and Logicality
On the Fregean view of NPs, quantified NPs are represented as operator-variable structures, while proper names are constants appearing in argument position. The Generalized Quantifier (GQ) approach characterizes quantified NPs as elements of a unified syntactic category and semantic type. According to the Logicality Thesis (May 1991), the distinction between quantified NPs, which undergo and operation of quantifier raising to yield operator-varia…

Dominance and modularity
In this paper we argue that all modes of perception are organized into salient and background constituents. We show that this organization is parallel to that of sentences which are divided into a focus constituent and background. We then argue that the process of recognizing these foregrounded constituents is nonmodular (in Fodor's sense) since it is conditioned by features external to each module. We suggest that a single task-specific mechanis…

Under stress: A functional explanation of English sentence stress
In this paper we argue that it is possible to account for sentential stress in English in terms of the pragmatic property of Dominance, which is assigned to a constituent in discourse contexts. We have shown elsewhere (Erteschik-Shir & Lappin, 1979) that constraints on extraction from syntactic islands, and conditions on certain rules of semantic interpretation are best formulated in terms of the notion of Dominance. In the first part of the pape…
