Those Terrible Songs: Laura E. Richards’s Ditties and the Education of Boys
Songs—singing and composing—were a staple in Laura Richards’s life. Her mother taught her songs, and she taught them to her own children, who found them “terrible” (Stepping Westward 245) at times, however. I want to pursue the educational and entertaining ideal of teaching songs to children, particularly boys, and speculate about Richards’s pedagogical intentions to enhance gendered notions of behavior and identity through her compositions. Affective Deception: Experiencing Genderplay in Louisa May Alcott
The essay attempts to theorize affective responses to a selection of Louisa May Alcott’s texts. Little Men, Moods, “Enigmas ,” and “My Mysterious Mademoiselle” all feature scenes of cross-gender play and revolve around deception due to the play on stereotypical gender expectations. I am interested in how this deception affects the recipients, which includes besides the characters of the stories also the reader
Rise like two angels in the night: Sexualized Violence against Queers in American Film
This essay discusses ways both mainstream Hollywood films and independent cinema have addressed sexualized violence against queers. I am looking at a number of significant films that refrain from stereotypically correlating queerness, sexuality, and violence, opting for a critical assessment of this conflation and offering alternative viewpoints, instead. While gay and lesbian characters have a steady presence in American television series by now, this is not the case with transgender persons.
