Context, Consequences and (Lack of) Commodification of Poland Women’s National Basketball Team’s 1999 EuroBasket Win
“No More Bullshit?”
The common belief is that conservative comedy is not funny. However, how then would one explain the recent rise of conservative, right-wing comedians such as FOX News’ Greg Gutfeld or podcasters Joe Rogan and Tim Dillon? If measured by sheer numbers and influence, the right indeed took over comedy, which, until recently, was the domain of liberals. The important branches of right-wing comedy are libertarian- and paleoconservative comedy. The term…
Sport and Video Games
This book explores the complex relationships between sport and video games, two of the largest entertainment sectors globally. Focusing on those games that depict real-life sports and athletic competitions, from FIFA, Madden, and NBA 2K to Football Manager and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, the book examines how sport has influenced gaming, and vice versa, and how this relationship is likely to develop in the future. Arguing that sports games are a uniq…
Oprah, Meghan, Harry, Pseudo-Events, and a Quick Fix to Boredom
The article uses the 2021 Oprah with Meghan and Harry television special as a case study to discuss pseudo-events and news cycles, which are represented as an antidote to boredom despite their lack of newsworthiness. I trace back today’s pseudo-events to the beginnings of the Graphic Revolution, during which news was transformed into a commodity, and its entertaining value gained major significance. As a result, the figure of the entertaining new…
Conflicting Blackness in Predator 2
The movie Predator 2 (1990) came out just two years before the L.A. Riots, and its depiction of Los Angeles as a war zone stems from the tensions within the city in the 1980s, which culminated in the 1992 riots. This article revisits the movie in the times of Black Lives Matter in order to show how 30 years after its release, it provides a complex, more nuanced picture of race in America of that time. As BLM activists demonstrate, the urban Afric…
Consequences of a Spectacle? Alleged Match-Fixing in the National Basketball Association Western Conference Finals of 2002
No major professional sports league epitomizes Guy Debord’s idea of the spectacle more than the NBA. The league was the first to understand the importance of highlights and global expansion, and participated in creating the first branded superstar in Michael Jordan. Naturally there are some controversies surrounding the rise to its present-day status, like the (supposedly) fixed 1985 draft or Michael Jordan’s (supposedly) enforced first retiremen…
Superior Donuts
In this article I analyze how the 2017 comedy series Superior Donuts handles a rather serious topic of gentrification. The show is based on real-life processes taking place in Uptown Chicago. An elderly Polish immigrant Arthur Przybyszewski and a young African-American Franco Wicks try to keep Arthur’s donut store from closing, while also resisting gentrification. Despite its obvious flaws – after all it is a feel-good sitcom, in which problems n…
Illusory Facets of Sport
In the society of the spectacle, illusion is an omnipresent phenomenon. It is used to distract the masses from issues crucial to their existence and to support a system of oppression. However, there is also a “lighter” side of illusion: it creates celebrities and helps sell products (films, music albums, sneakers, etc.). While the connotation is that spectacle uses illusion in order to present the ordinary or negative as extraordinary and positiv…
"Urban Tensions - Hubert Selby Jr."s Last Exit to Brooklyn
In one of the few studies devoted to Hubert Selby Jr.'s fiction, Josephine Hendin characterizes him as a “surrealist of the streets.” 1 The writer, whose body of work consists of six novels and a collection of short stories, was primarily concerned with oppression and resistance. He was one of the most notorious authors of transgressive fiction of the twentieth century, and a prime example of his powerful writing is his 1964 debut, Last Exit to B…
