Culture as Collateral Damage? Evidence From the Impact of Sanctions on Cultural Trade
We examine how various types of sanctions—trade, financial, military, arms and travel—affect trade in cultural goods, and, for comparison, in non‐cultural goods. We find that trade sanctions have significant negative impacts on cultural and non‐cultural trade. The magnitude and nature of these impacts vary depending on the type and coverage of trade sanctions. Furthermore, our study reveals significant collateral damage to bilateral cultural trad…
Building back greener, levelling-up or both? An assessment of the economic and environmental efficiency transition of UK regions
This paper assesses the transition of UK regions towards the policy ambitions of “building back greener” and “levelling-up” the UK economy. We use data envelopment analysis (DEA) methods to calculate regional economic and environmental efficiency for 41 UK ITL2 regions between 2005 and 2020, and then assess their “unconditional” and “spatial” transition probabilities of improving one of the two efficiencies or both. We find evidence of a trade-of…
The twin innovation transitions of European regions
We investigate the spatial distributions and transitions of European regions' innovative orientation to information and communication technology (ICT), green technology or twin technologies.Using a transition probability approach and spatial methods, we estimate the probability of regions becoming innovative in either or both technologies and assess the role of spillovers.ICT-oriented regions are more likely to make a twin transition than the gre…
La decelerazione pandemica come apertura di potenziali di trasformazione sociale. Alcuni percorsi di teoria critica
The global health crisis related to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic has restored unexpected relevance to certain theoretical schemes that are part of the conceptual heritage of the Frankfurt critical theory. In particular, a new actuality seemed to regain the nexus between crisis, critique and emancipation, thematized in this tradition of critical thinking. Building on this premise, the article discusses a series of interventions on the pande…
The “Great Lockdown” and cultural consumption in the UK
In this paper, we exploit a unique weekly longitudinal survey of adults in the UK purposefully collected to study consumption choices with respect to cultural content types during the first Covid-19 national lockdown (the “Great Lockdown”). We look for changes in the probability of consuming different cultural and creative types of content (Music, Movies, TV, Games, Books, Magazines and Audiobooks), as well as changes in the overall variety of co…
I am not a Post-Marxist
Fraser is one of the most important American philosophers and one of the leading figures of contemporary critical theory. From the 1980s to the present, Fraser has published on political philosophy and social theory, reflected upon feminism, justice, and capitalism, and has participated in public debates on current issues. The interview aims at retracing the main themes of her thought, underlining the persisting link which joins her understanding…
Starving the golden goose? Access to finance for innovators in the creative industries
This paper extends research on innovating firms’ access to finance in the creative industries. While we know that entrepreneurial firms experience barriers to applying for funding and difficulties in securing positive outcomes, prior studies have shown that firms may use patents to signal innovative quality to potential investors. Yet these studies typically focus on R&D-oriented innovation in ‘traditional’ technological sectors. Creative industr…

An interview with Andrew Arato
This article features a collective interview with Andrew Arato. In critical theory, the work of Andrew Arato stands out not least for its in-depth and wide \nengagement with comparative empirical analysis.1 In his earlier work, in the late 1970s/early 1980s, Arato’s work focused on Western Marxism, the Frankfurt School and its continuation with Ju ̈rgen Habermas, but was also immediately relating such theoretical discussions to real life events, …

Situating Rahel Jaeggi in the Contemporary Frankfurt Critical Theory
This article aims to show how the originality of Jaeggi’s contribution to recent debates in critical theory clearly emerges if one compares her approach with what in many ways represents its antecedent and constant point of reference: namely, the critical theory of Axel Honneth. This comparison offers a privileged way of grasping the advantages of Jaeggi’s approach with respect to that of Honneth. At the same time, reversing perspective, it permi…
From Hegel to Foucault and back? On Axel Honneth’s interpretation of neoliberalism
The article is focused on the role that the question of neoliberalism plays in Axel Honneth’s work. The author aims to show that when Honneth tries to conceptualize the very nature of the neoliberal transformations, he is forced to abandon some of the presumptions that underlie the systematic approach developed in his most important work, Freedom’s Right. It seems to emerge from Honneth’s studies on neoliberalism, not only the difficulty of analy…
National fiscal consolidations and regional inequality in Europe
Using annual data for 13 European countries over the period 1980-2008, we assess the impact of national fiscal consolidations on the income inequality of European regions. Regional dispersion increases in the outcome of consolidation episodes, particularly, when packages are more severe and implemented through spending cuts rather than tax rises. From a policy perspective, these findings suggest that fiscal consolidations driven by reductions in …

Total Factor Productivity Convergence among Italian Regions
Byrne J. P., Fazio G. and Piacentino D. Total factor productivity convergence among Italian regions: some evidence from panel unit root tests. Regional Studies. This paper employs panel unit root tests to investigate convergence in total factor productivity (TFP) among Italian regions. These tests provide an inference valid in the presence of heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence, and when the cross-sectional dimension is smaller than the …
