What No One Tells You About Birth Control”
Seventeen magazine's minimal coverage of contraception and abortion provides teen girl readers with inadequate and limited information regarding reproductive and sexual health. This pre- Dobbs historical analysis of the content of the main editorial sections of the magazine from 2010 to 2018 demonstrates a lack of discourse regarding contraceptive methods for readers. Examining how contraception and abortion are discussed in the print versions of…
Get Fierce in 5
Seventeen Magazine, the longest running magazine for adolescent girls in the United States, reinforces problematic images of the 'healthy' adolescent girl by routinely featuring slim celebrities and models, all of whom adhere to a desirable body ideal of hegemonic beauty. Misleading and contradictory narratives of postfeminist, neoliberal empowerment include telling girl readers to love their bodies while simultaneously portraying the slim body a…
‘Fix Her Mistake’
Recognising the impact that fictional stories can have in shaping viewers’ beliefs about abortion in the United States, I analyse unplanned pregnancy storylines in four popular television shows (Jane the Virgin, The Fosters, Riverdale, and Pretty Little Liars) with large young adult and adolescent audiences to critique how this issue is contextualised for this specific viewing demographic. The unintended pregnancy of each character is part of a l…
I Love Romance!” Adolescent Girls Critique the Depiction of Love and Romance in The Hunger Games
In this qualitative study, nine adolescent girls between the ages of eleven and fourteen (M=12) reacted to how romance is depicted in The Hunger Games book and film series. Although some feminist researchers have been disappointed in the series ending, arguing that it reinforces post-feminist, repronormative and heteronormative ideas, most of the participants in this study felt that the inclusion of romance was appropriate for protagonist Katniss…
Intersectional Feminism and Social Justice in Teen Vogue
In this article, we argue that Teen Vogue has evolved to encompass aspects of intersectional, feminist activism that is particularly evident in the 2017 “Voices” section of the magazine. This evolution challenges previous research that has found that, historically, teen magazines focus heavily on heteronormativity, ideals of beauty, and consumerism. Our analysis of the content of this section of Teen Vogue in 2017 demonstrates that teen magazines…
Hot-for-Teacher
In this article I explore the highly problematic but wildly acclaimed romantic relationship between Aria Montgomery, a high school junior, and her English teacher Ezra Fitz in the television series Pretty Little Liars. This partnership normalizes gendered power imbalances often common to heterosexual partnerships, yet fervent fans have supported the duo enthusiastically, dubbing the couple #Ezria in blogs and social media. As we know, much resear…
Navigating TRAP Laws, Protesters, and Police Presence at a Midwestern Abortion Clinic in the United States
Patient-level outcomes are frequently the focus of research on restrictive abortion laws, and qualitative literature examining the experiences of volunteers and non-physicians is sparse. To better understand how TRAP (Targeted Regulation of Abortion Provider) laws and abortion restrictions affect abortion clinic operations in the United States, I conducted a case study of 11 non-physician staff and volunteers at an abortion clinic in a low-income…
