“I’m Here to Work and Not to Call”
In blue-collar work, such as construction and landscaping, mobile devices allow for communication across dispersed workplaces while posing risks to worker outcomes, including physical safety. When mobile devices interrupt workers, they are tasked with making rapid decisions about how to respond. This study examines how blue-collar workers experience and navigate interruptions by mobile communication technologies. Based on 46 semi-structured inter…
The Chaffee principle
Steven Chaffee stated that 'the most likely "effect" of communication...is further communication' (p. 72). The present study asks to what extent this offering, referred to as 'The Chaffee Principle,' is realized in extant communication research. A manual content analysis of two top-tier communication journals (N = 2,040) offers an assessment of empirical attention to a variety of communicative acts in mass, interpersonal, and mediated-interperson…
Resilience in the gig economy
Research on digital inequality suggests that digital skills are integral to participation on gig platforms. Focusing on the case of online freelancing, this article asks what such skills look like and how gig workers translate them into opportunities. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 21 U.S. online freelancers, I identify moments in which participants approach the gig platform differently because of their digital skills. I find that dig…
Is it time for me to be authentic
On social media, people often value authenticity and realness, yet the ways in which platforms promote authenticity may conflict with people’s goals to present an idealized self. Launched in 2020, the social media app BeReal encourages authenticity by prompting users to post unfiltered front and back camera photos at a particular time, thereby limiting control over their online self-presentation. We interviewed 25 BeReal users, exploring how they…
Inequality and Discrimination in the Online Labor Market
Online labor markets present opportunities to exchange work for money that require different resources and skills than the traditional labor market. Unlike other forms of participation in the realm of society that happens on and via the Internet, participating as an independent contractor in an online labor market does not only depend on individual access to technology, knowledge, motivation, and skills, but also on the preferences and biases of …
Participation inequality in the gig economy
In theory, the gig economy facilitates flexible, digitally mediated employment arrangements. Why do some people wind up doing gig work while others do not? We focus on how online participation inequalities, and Internet use experiences and skills, shape the composition of online gig workers. Specifically, we analyze a unique survey data set from a national sample of 1512 U.S. adults that includes information about background attributes and behavi…
Inequality and discrimination in the online labor market
Based on a comprehensive set of studies collected via five academic databases, this scoping review examines how inequality and discrimination have been studied in the context of paid online labor. We identify three approaches in the literature that aim to (1) identify participation patterns in (national) survey data, (2) examine background characteristics of online contractors based on survey or digital trace data, and (3) reveal social biases in…
Engaging with Covid-19 content on social media in the United States
While the partisanship of U.S. media outlets is well documented, the role of political affiliation in social media adoption and online discussions is much less studied. Social media allow individuals to contribute to the dissemination of information. As a result, understanding the relationship between political affiliation and content-sharing behaviors provides insight into whose voices are represented in social media content. Political affiliati…
Hiding Traces of Status Seeking
The prevailing presence of social media in the twenty-first century has changed processes of self-presentation. This study questions how Instagram users employ the platform's tagging features to claim and seek status. Content analysis on a random sample of 787 posts carrying the hashtag 'instagood' revealed that they utilize the tagging affordances to make their audience aware of their capital. In addition to displaying their capital through tags…
