Conscious Processing and the Global Neuronal Workspace Hypothesis
Drug Addiction
In the present paper, we suggest a potential new ethical analysis of addiction focusing on the relationship between aware and unaware processing in the brain. We take the case of the opioids epidemics to argue that a consideration of both aware and unaware processing provides a more comprehensive ethical framework to discuss the ethical issues raised by addiction. Finally, our hypothesis is that in addition to identified Central Nervous System's …
Two Cultures and Our Encyclopaedic Brain
I support a fundamental principle stressed by the Encyclopédie , that the Unity of Knowledge is the direct consequence of the unity of the human brain. All of us are animated by what Claude Bernard called a ‘kind of thirst for the unknown’ which ennobles and enlivens scientific inquiry. We must humbly confess for now our immense ignorance – ignoramus . But to satisfy Claude Bernard’s ‘ardent desire for knowledge’ we should never say, as some phil…

The title “The Life of Forms” is taken from a book by Henri Focillon, a work which he published in 1934 and devoted to the work of art. “The work of art”, he wrote, “is an attempt at the unique, it asserts itself as a whole, an absolute and, at the same time, it belongs to a system of complex relations. The work of art is the measure of space, it is form and this is what must be addressed”. In one of his political treatises, Balzac wrote: “All is…

The Languages of the Brain
Reflections of a neuroscientist on the origins of ethics
The increased globalization of economics, communications and of medical care raises many issues of ethics and science and their applications on the global scale. A critical question to consider is the possibility of common agreement between people sharing different moral, philosophical or religious traditions. Common neurocognitive predispositions to moral judgement, which are found in the human species, may plausibly give access to common ethica…
A neuronal model of a global workspace in effortful cognitive tasks
A minimal hypothesis is proposed concerning the brain processes underlying effortful tasks. It distinguishes two main computational spaces: a unique global workspace composed of distributed and heavily interconnected neurons with long-range axons, and a set of specialized and modular perceptual, motor, memory, evaluative, and attentional processors. Workspace neurons are mobilized in effortful tasks for which the specialized processors do not suf…

Origins of the Human Brain
Humans have always been fascinated by their origins, and the evolutionary development of the human brain is of particular interest as one's intellectual, emotional, and cultural capacities are considered to be unique among animals. This book brings together a group of eminent scientists from the fields of psychology, anthropology, neuroscience, and evolutionary biology. Their views provide a starting point for a debate based on the most recent sc…

Art and Neuroscience
The author's intention is to foster further neuroscientific research in the field of art criticism, such as investigations of the possible neural origins of aesthetic pleasure and artistic creation. He conducts such an investigation through reference to a painting by Jacques de Bellange, discussing and analyzing topics such as mental evolution and the faculty of recognition as they relate to the perception and creation of art and the establishmen…
