  • The Measure of the Archive

Open Access•Yann Ryan, Yann C Ryan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Analytics•2021

Network analysis of historical correspondence can be a fruitful way to address historical research questions, and has been increasingly used in historical studies over the past decade. As with many areas of quantitative humanities research, the reliability of the results are often called into question, given that such approaches require ’hard data’ as input, yet almost inevitably use datasets with partial or missing records. Other disciplines usi…

  • Brain Networks Reveal the Effects of Antipsychotic Drugs on Schizophrenia Patients and Controls

    Open Access•Emma K Towlson, Petra E Vértes et al.•PREPRINT•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

The study of brain networks, including those derived from functional neuroimaging data, attracts a broad interest and represents a rapidly growing interdisciplinary field. Comparing networks of healthy volunteers with those of patients can potentially offer new, quantitative diagnostic methods and a framework for better understanding brain and mind disorders. We explore resting state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data through netwo…

  • Metadata, Surveillance and the Tudor State

    Open Access•Ruth Ahnert, Sebastian E Ahnert•ARTICLE•History Workshop Journal•2019

In 2013 the whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed a surveillance programme called PRISM, within which the United States National Security Agency (NSA) had accessed and analysed the metadata from phone calls, emails, and other digital data stored by Verizon and nine internet companies. This article seeks to show that surprisingly deep insights can be gleaned from metadata by applying a range of easily available network-analysis algorithms to a bod…

  • A Community Under Attack

    Ruth Ahnert, Sebastian E Ahnert•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2014

This article uses mathematical and computational techniques to reconstruct and analyze the social and textual organization of the underground community of Protestants living in England during the reign of Mary I from 289 surviving letters

  • The Flavor Network

    Yong-Yeol Ahn, Sebastian E Ahnert et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2013•References: 6

The authors investigate regional variations in culinary culture by constructing a flavor network of food ingredients, based on shared flavor compounds, and comparing this network to recipe data. They show that Western and Eastern cuisines differ in their compound sharing patterns. The findings show, in particular, that only Western cuisines support the hypothesis that foods sharing flavor compounds are more likely to taste well together. Using ad…
