Predictors of antepartum and postpartum suicidal ideation at a diverse urban obstetric setting
Perinatal suicidality is a leading contributor to maternal mortality, and is associated with adverse outcomes for birthing individuals and children. Further research is needed to establish risk factors for perinatal suicidal ideation (SI), particularly among diverse populations. This study explored risk factors for perinatal SI within a diverse urban obstetric setting. Data were derived from the electronic medical records of 3,983 perinatal indiv…
Forest Bathing Increases Adolescent Connection to Nature
Previous research has demonstrated that practicing forest bathing has significant positive effects on well-being. However, few studies have investigated whether forest bathing increases practitioner connectedness to nature or involved adolescent participants. Determining if forest bathing increases connectedness to nature is a critical expansion of forest bathing research, as connectedness to nature is linked to environmental care and concern as …
Forest Bathing Increases Adolescents’ Mental Well-Being
Previous research has demonstrated that practicing forest bathing has significant positive effects on adult psychological well-being. Considering the ongoing adolescents' mental health crisis of increasing anxiety and depression, determining whether forest bathing has similar effects on adolescents is an important expansion of forest bathing research. This study investigated the possibility that forest bathing could improve adolescents' mental we…
In Their Own Words
The purpose of this study was to examine, via testimonial data, resistance strategies used to thwart a sexual assault among slum-dwelling Kenyan adolescent girls ( N = 678) following their participation in an empowerment self-defense program ( IMpower ). The majority (58.2%) of perpetrators were strangers; there were no differences in resistance strategies used between strangers versus known perpetrators (83.8% used verbal strategies, 33.2% used …

Past Care Predicts Future Care in Out-of-Care People Living with HIV
Resting-state connectivity biomarkers define neurophysiological subtypes of depression
HIV patient retention
Decreased visit attendance leads to poor health outcomes, decreased viral suppression, and higher mortality rates for persons living with HIV. Retention in care is an important factor in improving health status for people living with HIV but continues to be a challenge in clinical settings. This paper details the development and implementation of the NC-LINK Retention Protocol, a clinic-based protocol to locate and reengage out-of-care patients, …
Inclusive Growth Analysis in Economies Prone to International Migration
Inclusive growth (IG) analysis involves \n analyzing the available data in a country to determine the \n best course of action for accelerating growth and or \n improving the distribution of the opportunities and benefits \n from the growth process. In economies in which international \n migration is a significant trend, that determination may be \n especially challenging. The international migration \n phenomenon can contribute to (or detract fr…
The Impact of Remittances on Growth Evidence from North African Countries
Remittances constitute financial flows \n that affect the receiving country's economy and its \n development through diverse channels, including income, \n consumption, investment, government policies, potential \n parental absence, and removal of potential entrepreneurial \n individuals from the community. In view of the economic \n significance of remittance flows to North African economies, \n this paper utilizes an econometric model aimed at …
Dissociable Intrinsic Connectivity Networks for Salience Processing and Executive Control
Variations in neural circuitry, inherited or acquired, may underlie important individual differences in thought, feeling, and action patterns. Here, we used task-free connectivity analyses to isolate and characterize two distinct networks typically coactivated during functional MRI tasks. We identified a “salience network,” anchored by dorsal anterior cingulate (dACC) and orbital frontoinsular cortices with robust connectivity to subcortical and …
Empirically Assessing Participant Perceptions of the Research Experience in a Randomized Clinical Trial
A growing body of empirical literature has systematically documented the reactions to research participation among participants in traumafocused research. To date, the available data has generally presented an optimistic picture regarding participants' ability to tolerate and even find benefit from their participation. However, this literature has been largely limited to cross-sectional designs. No extant literature has yet examined the perceptio…
HIV and Aids
HIV is a worldwide epidemic. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), 30.6 million people were living with HIV at the end of 1997 (1998). This epidemic not only has implications on the individual but also society. The International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement (IWG) is an organization that studies issues concerning death, dying, and bereavement and produces materials of social value. They have…
