    Walter V Scholes, Marie V Scholes•ARTICLE•Pacific Historical Review•1968•Cited by: 2

WITH THE RECENT OPENING Of the British archives, new information has become available concerning the reaction of Sir Edward Grey to President Woodrow Wilson's Mexican policy. Grey's guideline in determining the British course of action was the avoidance of any difficulty with the United States. Therefore, although he deemed the American policy unwise and made an effort to change Wilson's attitude toward President Huerta, Grey nonetheless tried to…

    Open Access•Walter V Scholes, Marie V Scholes•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1963•Cited by: 1•References: 1

While the negotiations between the United States and Ecuador in the period 1909 to 1913 came to no fruitful conclusion, they still remain a subject of interest because in microcosm they illustrate so well how the Department of State operated in the Taft administration. The negotiations embraced all the standard considerations: strategy, vested American interests, projected loans, power politics, and “ up-lift.” The Department's interest in Ecuado…

  • Church and State at the Mexican Constitutional Convention, 1856–1857

    Open Access•Walter V Scholes•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1947•Cited by: 1

The liberals at the Mexican constitutional convention of 1856–1857 were fairly representative of any group trying to establish the authority of the state over the clerical groups. Moreover their political thought shows the stress on material affairs rather than that of the spiritual realm. The quarrel between state and church in Mexico of course was not new. It had its antecedents in the colonial period when the Spanish crown had been able, in ge…

  • EL Mensajero and the Election of 1871 in Mexico

    Open Access•Walter V Scholes•ARTICLE•The Americas A Quarterly Review…•1948•References: 1

The Late 1860’s and early 1870’s marked for Mexico the end of an era, for Benito Juárez was serving his last years in the presidency. At the same time there were the stirrings of a new personal order; Porfirio Díaz was making his first overt attempt to gain control. In this period some of the greatest liberals turned against Juárez and toward Díaz. The charges which they hurled against the former during the year 1871 resemble those used against D…

  • Mexico in 1896 as Viewed by an American Consul

    Walter V Scholes•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1950

Several important inferences may be derived from this table: (1) The correspondence between Lebr6n's values for 1554 and the Cook and Simpson estimates for 1560-1570 is exceedingly close, a difference of only 5 per cent, which may be owing to loss of population during the intervening decade. In any case, it supports the validity of the method we used in establishing our statistical bench-mark for 1565. (2) Although the sample of purely Crown town…
