Mapping Sexual Harassment in Public Places
Womens' and girls' safety in public places is undermined by sexual harassment, yet the environmental correlates of risk remain poorly understood. Using the environmental criminology framework, this mixed-method research aims to map and analyze reported incidents of sexual harassment in Delhi, India. Spatial and descriptive analyses revealed high concentrations and patterns of significant situational factors associated with both physical and nonph…
Hot Spots of Commercial Sex Activities in New York City Neighborhoods
Understanding the spatial distribution of commercial sex activities (CSA) in urban environments is important in addressing the harms against sex workers and identifying sex trafficking operations. Guided by crime pattern theory, using Census data and New York Police Department (NYPD) prostitution-related arrests data ( N = 29,075) from 2010 to 2019, this study examines the “hot spots” of CSA in New York City. Local Spatial Autocorrelation Analysi…
Women police stations
Women police stations (WPS) are recognized as an important component of gender-sensitive policing for dealing with domestic violence (DV). These stations have been established in many developing countries to serve two main purposes: to deal better with crimes against women and to provide a rewarding career for women officers. This paper examines whether WPS have met these expectations. At a time when other countries are thinking about introducing…
Utility of ecological momentary assessments to collect data on fear of crime
Smartphone technology provides a unique opportunity to collect context-specific data from individuals. Very few published studies have attempted to gather context-specific information on fear of crime using smartphone technology. With our pilot study in Lahore, Pakistan, we examined the utility of administration of Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMAs) via our smartphone application to collect real-time and context-dependent information on tran…

International crime and justice is an emerging field that covers crime and justice from a global perspective. This book introduces the nature of international and transnational crimes, theoretical foundations to understanding the relationship between social change and the waxing and waning of the crime opportunity structure, globalization, migration, culture conflicts, and the emerging legal frameworks for their prevention and control. It present…

International Crime and Justice
International crime and justice is an emerging field that covers international and transnational crimes that have not been the focus of mainstream criminology or criminal justice. This book examines the field from a global perspective. It provides an introduction to the nature of international and transnational crimes and the theoretical perspectives that assist in understanding the relationship between social change and the waxing and waning of …

Women Police Stations as a Dispute Processing System
In 1992, the Tamil Nadu State government in India began to introduce all-women police stations whose primary role is to deal with crimes against women, including family violence and dowry disputes. Dowry giving is a customary practice in India, which often results in disputes between young wives and their new families. As a result, the young women may be subjected to physical and mental ill treatment, sometimes resulting in death. Using detailed …

Domestic violence among immigrants from India
Little research has been reported on domestic violence among Indian immigrant families in the United States. While one national survey suggests that this is not a major problem, several smaller scale studies that focus specifically on South Asian immigrants suggest there is a substantial hidden problem warranting attention. In order to assist future research, this paper presents an integrated theoretical model to explain domestic violence in Indi…
Women Police in a Traditional Society
It has been argued that policewomen in traditional societies do not aspire to being fully integrated into mainstream policing, but may prefer a more restricted and segregated role. This thesis is examined in the context of policing in Tamil Nadu, a state of India. The present study uses data gathered through interviews and a standardized questionnaire, and focuses on the preferences expressed by women officers about roles and styles of policing. …
Towards Equality
The present study reviews the historical background and the current status of women police in India. This is the first study to use a survey questionnaire with a large sample (N = 183) of women officers. The officers were sampled from police departments in Tamil Nadu, one of the 25 states in India. Data were collected on their personal characteristics, deployment status, career commitment, interests, role-expectations and their assessments of the…
Victimization of Women
Deaths of young brides through suicide or homicide following disputes over the dowry (gifts given by the bride’s family to that of the groom during and after the marriage) are increasingly a feature of Indian society. Explanations of this social problem have been too heavily concentrated on the socio-cultural and psychological factors implicated and need to be supplemented by victimological and criminological concepts, drawn especially from routi…
Subway Slugs
Ticket vending machines, installed throughout the London Underground at the end of the 1980s, proved vulnerable to easily-made 50p slugs and had to be modified. Subsequent analysis of the distribution of slug use suggested that, while ordinary passengers and delinquents might have been responsible for the bulk of the problem, several groups of organized offenders had been systematically obtaining large sums of money from the machines at distinct …
A Comparative Analysis of Women Policing in India
This study, which includes a comparison of American experience, focuses on women policing in India. Using a standardized survey questionnaire, data were collected from women officers on line duty in all district police departments in the State of Tamil Nadu, India, and in municipal and sheriff's departments in New Jersey. A discriminant analysis found important differences between the samples in the officer's preferred roles, with more of the off…
