The Impact of Race and Gender on Correctional Officers' Orientation to the Integrated Environment
The effects of race and gender on the work experiences and professional orientations of correctional officers were tested using data obtained from 155 front-line staff in a southern U.S. correctional system. Main effect and interaction multivariate tests were conducted, and both organizational and individual effects were observed. Racial correlates showed that Black officers were significantly more likely to perceive peer support, to perceive the…
The Correctional Orientation of Bermuda Prison Guards
This study surveys all Bermuda correctional officers in an attempt to determine their attitudes toward a custody or rehabilitative orientation in handling inmates. When employing the Cullen, et al. (1989) correctional orientation measures, we found Bermuda officers more supportive of treatment for inmates than American officers surveyed by Cullen, et al. (1989). In addition, we found that officers' education, income, and rank significantly affect…

While supervisory support mitigated both work stress and job dissatisfaction, the effects of other coping fa…

Challenges to Lay Judges in Germany
Scepticism about the role of juries in the American judicial process has prompted consideration of alternative ways of involving lay persons in adjudication. One possibility is to incorporate into American courts a mixed tribunal of the type common to European judicial systems; in these tribunals, which have nearly displaced the traditional jury of the Anglo-Saxon tradition, there is a mixed bench composed of both professional (legally trained) j…
Mala in Se
Although the terms mala in se and mala prohibita appear in legal treatises, in court opinions, and in statutes, their definitions are far from clear. In the following article, the doctrine of mala in se is examined in regard to its historical genesis, the rationales which lie behind it, and its legal utility. Discussion of the concept involves questions about the relationship of the mala in se doctrine to common law, to mens rea, to the idea of s…
The Single Taxers' 'Invasion' of Delaware
In 1895 a group of Single Taxers-members of the ethical democratic social reform movement founded by the American Journalist, Henry George-'invaded' Delaware in an attempt, by concentrating their efforts, to achieve a demonstration of the efficacy of their theories by putting them into practice. The campaign won adherents but it failed to win adoption of the program because the idealists were not political realists and so they were unaware that D…
