  • A Comparative Exploration of Perceived Community and Police Adherence to Covid-19 Regulations

Open Access•Sanja Kutnjak Ivković, Yuning Wu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Offender…•2025

Based on an early 2020s survey of 3,500 police officers from nine countries, this paper explores perceived community and police adherence to the COVID-19 regulations. We propose that both public and police perceived adherence with the COVID-19 rules are related not only to individual-level factors (e.g., gender, concern for own health) but also to country-level factors (e.g., quality of governance, protection of citizens’ rights). Our findings re…

  • Enforcing the unenforceable

Yuning Wu, Sanja Kutnjak Ivković et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2025

During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments relied on the police to enforce COVID-19 rules. However, little is known about police enforcement of these norms and use of discretion in this process. The current study draws on a sample of 3,866 police officers from 10 countries across the globe and examines officers’ use of discretion when encountering violations of COVID-19 rules. We assess the relative significance of factors such as the perceptions …

Design/methodology/approach The authors used survey data from 448 police officers in Croatia. Respondents were presented wi…

  • Does the police code of silence vary with police assignment? An empirical exploration of the relation between the code and assignment

Sanja Kutnjak Ivković, Skyler J Morgan et al.•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2020

This paper contains an in-depth exploration of the relation between police code of silence and police assignment. A police integrity survey was used to measure the contours of the code among Croatian patrol officers, detectives, and community-policing officers. Samples of police officers evaluated fourteen hypothetical scenarios describing various forms of police misconduct. Whereas the type of assignment was a weak predictor of the respondents’ …

  • Effects of Carrying Police Equipment on Spatiotemporal and Kinetic Gait Parameters in First Year Police Officers

Open Access•Mario Kasović, Lovro Štefan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The main purpose of the study was to explore the effects of carrying police equipment on spatiotemporal and kinetic gait parameters. Two-hundred and seventy-five healthy men and women attending police academy (32% women) were randomly recruited. Gait analysis without and with a police equipment load (≈3.5 kg) was analyzed using the Zebris pressure platform. Differences and effect sizes were calculated using a Student t -test and Wilcoxon test for…

  • Protecting human rights

Sanja Kutnjak Ivković, Krunoslav Borovec•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018•References: 7

This paper explores the evolution of the protection of human rights in light of democratisation of the Croatian police. The story of democratisation of the Croatian police and their protection of human rights is particularly complex because of the war and its consequences. Using the grounded theory approach, the paper builds an argument that, because of the Croatian police are a part of the society at large, the way in which the police have dealt…
