Emotional Labor, Systemic Barriers, and Coping Strategies
Victim advocates play a critical role in supporting victims throughout the criminal justice process and their work is often shaped by significant emotional, organizational, and systemic challenges. This qualitative study inductively examines how victim advocates describe and interpret the challenges and barriers they encounter in their work, as well as the strategies they use to cope with or navigate these circumstances. Gender, Age and Victimization Risk Among Missing Persons
The purpose of this study was to examine the risk of victimization among missing persons and the ways in which gender and age shape this relationship. From a sample of 1,847 missing persons reports, multiple logistic regression was used to estimate victimization risk when missing, disaggregated by gender and age group and including vulnerability factors (i.e., the reasons for victimization risk). Results reveal that female missing persons compare…

Sweden is considered to be among the most gender-equal countries globally and this philosophy influences every aspect of Swedish culture from medical care to foreign policy. It is not clear, however, to what extent this approach has been accepted or adopted by Swedish police officers. Using interviews with 27 Swedish police officers, this study explores the use of gender rhetoric in descriptions of victims. By performing an inductive thematic ana…
Trauma experienced by researchers
Purpose Specifically, the authors discuss three challenges that researchers—especially graduate students—often face: (1) access to adequate material and guidance for researchers; (2) the internal and external strains researchers may face, and (3) the limited conceptualization of research on sensitive topics or vulnerable populations. Although these three challenges may be present for many graduate students and junior scholars, it is important to …

Experience, Seniority and Gut Feeling—A Qualitative Examination of How Swedish Police Officers Perceive They Value, Evaluate and Manage Knowledge When Making Decisions
There is a debate in current scholarship regarding whether or not education and training is an effective tool to change police officers’ conduct. Compared to the United States, Sweden has longer training for officers who experience 2 years of academic training and 6 months of practical training. The Swedish police training is also, contrary to the American training, standardized. This paper aims to investigate how Swedish officers value, evaluate…
Child and Pet Care‐Planning During Covid ‐19
OBJECTIVE: Using a mixed-methods design, we aimed to understand household dynamics and choices in hypothetical planning for child and pet care if an individual is faced with hospitalization for COVID-19. BACKGROUND: As the COVID-19 public health crisis persists, children and pets are vulnerable to caregiver hospitalization. METHODS: Bivariate associations from a large-scale survey explore hypothetical options for dependent care-planning. An open-…
