Finding Identity and Community
This study explores the Vietnamese American experience in sport and physical activity. Framed through Lisa Lowe’s conceptions of hybridity, heterogeneity, and multiplicity, results from 18 semi-structured interviews generated three themes: connection to Vietnamese community and culture, desire for Vietnamese representation, and Vietnamese American sport and physical activity identities. Findings illustrate how sports and physical activity partici…
Working With Similarities and Differences
Transdisciplinary research and research teams are becoming increasingly valued in academic spaces. The potential of transdisciplinary research is that the diversity of thought and experience can create robust research processes from project inception, methodological protocol, data collection, data analysis and reporting output. Yet, transdisciplinary research teams can also bring about complications pertaining to conflicting epistemological persp…
“Elite but not elitist”
This study critically examines issues related to race, place, class, and culture within public physical activity spaces. Drawing on Fairclough’s (1992) three-dimensional framework for analyzing discourse and Neckerman et al.’s (1999) minority culture of mobility, we examined the historical narratives of founders and leaders at ALL4ONE (n=7), a free, Black, Indigenous, People-of-Color-led (BIPOC) fitness community based in San Francisco, CA (the o…
Critical Friends, Dialogues of Discomfort, and Researcher Reflexivity in the Sociology of Sport
In this special issue, which calls for a “more radical sociology of sport and physical culture,” the purpose of this paper is to address how practices of reflexivity might be mobilized among critical sport scholars toward changing the intersectional, fragmented, and complex communities we inhabit inside and outside the academy. We begin by conducting a literature review of researcher reflexivity and positionality in Sociology of Sport Journal fro…
‘Nước Việtnam là Quê Hương Của Tôi
Using autoethnography I draw on my experiences conducting fieldwork in Vietnam on Sport for Development (SfD) to explore the historical, political, and sociocultural vulnerabilities of the Vietnamese-American researcher in SfD. In doing so, I narrate and revisit the past of my parents and how their memories influenced my research and identity. Of central concern in this paper is how historical and biographical portrayals (Mills, 1959) of being Vi…
Personal pasts become academic presents
When conducting qualitative research, researchers tend to find themselves closely connected to the participants in the field. This paper examines the complexities that existed for two researchers during time in the field conducting research closely related to their lived histories. Specifically, we consider the complicated dual role of insider/outsider that some researchers may occupy during field work when they ‘return home’ to a specific space …
Pragmatic Approaches for Development from Sports
aIn the following, I present and detail the ways in which I believe Sport for Development (SfD) research can further extend its empirical knowledge and theoretical foundation. The ideas found of th

Considering sport for development and peace through the capabilities approach
Heeding calls to integrate international development studies with Sport for Development and Peace (SDP), we approach SDP using the Capabilities Approach as articulated by Martha Nussbaum. Applying such a framework to the study and practice of SDP offers a politically engaged yet practical approach, and serves to theorise ways in which sport programmes might be conceptualised and organised as part of holistic approaches to development and not simp…
