Community Pharmacy‐Based Injectable Opioid Agonist Treatment
Capacity Building and Creating Supportive Environments for Inclusive Community-Based Participatory Research
Community members, service users, and people with lived experience, sometimes referred to as 'peers,' are increasingly engaged in public health research and practice. The involvement of peers can enhance the acceptability and efficacy of public health interventions, foster trust, and is particularly significant in public health contexts characterized by stigma and criminalization. The involvement of peers in research, such as through community-ba…
Characterising individuals with a substance use disorder accessing hospital‐based addiction care
Association of sex work and social-structural factors with non-fatal overdose among women who use drugs in Vancouver, Canada
Assessing the Temporality Between Transitions onto Opioid Agonist Therapy and Engagement with Antiretroviral Therapy in a Cohort of HIV-Positive People Who Use Opioids Daily
Crack cocaine use frequency is associated with HIV disease severity independent of antiretroviral therapy exposure
An innovative acute care based intervention to address the opioid crisis in a Canadian setting
The ongoing opioid crisis has placed a considerable burden on acute care settings in North America. The present commentary outlines that the rising volume of patients with opioid‐related harms in acute care settings represents an often‐missed opportunity to address important health and social needs as well as facilitate access to addiction treatment services. It then describes an innovative, inter‐disciplinary model‐of‐care developed to address t…
Non‐medical prescription opioid use and in‐hospital illicit drug use among people who use drugs
Prevalence and longitudinal correlates of recent exposure to fentanyl among HIV-positive people who use unregulated drugs during a community-wide overdose crisis
The United States and Canada are experiencing an opioid overdose crisis driven largely by exposure to fentanyl (a potent synthetic opioid), with little known about fentanyl exposure among HIV-positive people who use unregulated drugs (PWUD). We sought to estimate the prevalence and correlates of fentanyl exposure among a community-recruited sample derived from a prospective cohort study of HIV-positive PWUD in Vancouver, Canada. Generalized linea…

Correlates of opioid and benzodiazepine co-prescription among people living with HIV in British Columbia, Canada
Hepatitis C treatment among incarcerated individuals in Canada and strategies to prevent reinfection in the postrelease period
It is well-recognised that individuals incarcerated are disproportionally affected by hepatitis C viral (HCV) infections across Canada.1 Accordingly, in 2017, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) announced increased funding for treatment initiation among the estimated 2700 HCV infected individuals in federal prison settings.2 In April and May 2017, approximately 121 federal inmates were initiated on HCV treatment. This compares to an estimated 606 f…
HIV-infected individuals who use alcohol and other drugs, and virologic suppression
People living with HIV (PLWH) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) who use substances were examined to (a) describe those with virologic control and (b) determine which substance use-factors are associated with lack of virologic control. Participants were adult PLWH taking ART with either past 12-month DSM-IV substance dependence or past 30-day alcohol or illicit drug use. Substance use factors included number of DSM-IV alcohol or drug dependence crit…
Binge drug use among street-involved youth in a Canadian setting
The prevalence of reporting binge drug use among the youth was high in this setting and was independently associated with a range of high-risk activities and markers of vulnerability. Querying high-risk youth about binge drug use may help prioritize those in greatest need of addiction treatment strategies and public health interventions
Adherence and plasma HIV RNA response to antiretroviral therapy among HIV-seropositive injection drug users in a Canadian setting
HIV-positive individuals who use injection drugs (IDU) may have lower rates of adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, previous studies of factors associated with adherence to ART among IDU have been limited primarily to samples drawn from clinical settings and in areas with financial barriers to healthcare. We evaluated patterns of ART adherence and rates of plasma HIV RNA response among a Canadian cohort of community-re…
