  • Can ‘life writing’ be therapeutic in response to trauma? An exploratory research project in Medical Humanities in South Africa

Dawn Garisch, Janet Giddy et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2023•References: 2

The therapeutic benefit of expressive writing has been well researched in the Global North but there is no literature from the Global South. Potentially healing interventions need to be investigated in different contexts, particularly where there is a need to build social cohesion. South Africa has a violent past and is a highly stressed society. An exploration of self-reports by a diverse group of South Africans on the effects of life writing on…

  • Trauma, Resilience, and Mental Health in Migrant and Non-Migrant Youth

Open Access•Justine M Gatt, Rebecca Alexander et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Resilience is a dynamic process of positive adaptation to significant adversity. While there has been substantial focus on risks and negative outcomes associated with youth migrancy, there is limited evidence of the relationship between the adversity of migration, and resilience, wellbeing, and positive mental health in adolescents. This international study aimed to explore the differences in resilience, wellbeing, and mental health behaviors in …

  • Decolonizing Qualitative Research With Rural People With Disabilities

Open Access•Kate Sherry, Xakathile Dabula et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020•References: 15

Decolonization of research is nowhere more pressing than in post-apartheid South Africa, where cross-cultural encounters characterize every aspect of society. The health system plays a critical role in realizing the rights of marginalized populations, particularly rural communities and people with disabilities. However, cultural divides between service users and health care workers render health care provision unexpectedly complex. Such divides l…

  • Challenges of developing and conducting an international study of resilience in migrant adolescents

    Open Access•Kristin Hadfield, M Ungar et al.•ARTICLE•International Social Work•2018•References: 1

The sequelae of migration and the effects of local migration policies on children’s physical and mental health are critical to examine, particularly given the historically high numbers of migrants and displaced people. The vulnerability of the study sample and the need to work across cultures and contexts makes research on this group challenging. We outline lessons learned through conducting a pilot study of resilience resources and mental health…

  • The Changing Significance of Race

    Open Access•Stephen Reid, Steve Reid•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The role of race in African-American biblical scholarship has shifted in the last 30 years. The scholars of the G.I. generation treated African presence in the Hebrew Bible as the central element in their research. The baby boom generation scholars work with the Hebrew Bible as a cultural icon for cultural criticism. It remains to see what directions Gen X research will take in the years to come

  • Health-Related Correlates of Gambling on the British National Lottery

Open Access•Steve Reid, Sally Woodford et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1999

The National Lottery has been estimated as being played by 65% of the adult British population. This study investigated whether higher average weekly spending on the Lottery is associated with various health-related variables. Results from a survey of 482 British adults (mean age = 33.3 yr.), consisting of 107 students and 375 people in employment, indicated that those who spent more on the Lottery had significantly poorer social functioning (Soc…
