Emotionally responsive social assistance: Towards ‘just’ processes for the poorest and most marginalised people in crises contexts
Marginalised people are disproportionally impacted by protracted crises, which increases their poverty deprivation, and the risks they face, by exacerbating pre-existing inequalities. This has destabilising emotional effects, leading to individual and collective trauma, on top of which are added poverty stigma and shame. Social assistance processes grounded in the same discriminatory systems may amplify emotional distress. Yet little is known abo…
Collective healing justice and sustainable African feminism
Addressing gender-based injustice and violence is a priority for feminist activism, but women's and queer rights activists are often motivated by past traumas that can undermine their work. Healing justice tackles such harm by incorporating collective healing processes as core movement-work. This article draws on qualitative research with 47 feminist activists and healers in 11 African countries and three learning events to show how collective he…

Economic Inequality and the Geography of Activity Space Segregation: Combining Mobile Device Data and Census Data
This article combines daily mobility data collected via mobile device and the American Community Survey to create comprehensive measures of activity space segregation across geographic areas in the United States. We extend conventional measures of spatial segregation to incorporate exposure in individuals’ routine activities, weighted by the flows of individuals between census block groups. Our analysis reveals three key findings. First, metropol…
I am Pleased to Share my Thoughts and Opinions'- Including Marginalised People with Disabilities in Inclusive Qualitative Research in Bangladesh Through Creative, Relational Methodologies
The rhetoric of 'nothing about us without us', motivates much disability inclusive research, but meaningful participation of the most marginalised is still rare. There is a tendency to recruit only people with disabilities who are perceived as 'easier to include'. We reflect critically on recent fieldwork in Bangladesh working with local and international NGOs on a disability inclusive employment project. We focus on inclusion of the most margina…
Mainstreaming disability inclusive employment in international development
People with disabilities are under-represented in the global workforce, and this problem is often particularly acute in the ‘global south’. This special issue seeks to provide new perspectives on why this is the case and comprises seven papers focused on disability inclusive employment. We deliberately wanted to place this collection in the Journal of International Development as a core development publication, rather than in a disability specifi…
Achieving disability inclusive employment – Are the current approaches deep enough
Diverse approaches to promoting disability inclusive employment aim to transform workplaces into truly inclusive environments, usually with intervention strategies targeting two main groups: employers and jobseekers with disabilities. However, they do not always consider other relevant stakeholders or address the relationships and interactions between diverse actors in the wider social ecosystem. These approaches often neglect deeper ‘vexing’ dif…
Researching Local Subjectivities in Contested Contexts: Using Intersecting Methodologies to Understand Large Green-Energy Projects in Kenya
This article critically reflects on the use of an ‘intersecting methodologies’ approach to generate understanding of the diverse experiences of people living near contested large green energy projects in Kenya. Local subjectivities are essential to understanding the contestations engendered by these projects, especially in areas that are distant from decision-making and global capital. However, researching residents’ experiences in these settings…
Lives turned upside down in Covid-19 times: Exploring disabled people's experiences in 5 low-and-middle income countries using narrative interviews
This article explores COVID-19 related experiences of disabled people in Bangladesh, Kenya, Nigeria, Nepal and Uganda. Narrative interviews generated storied responses, focussing on respondents' priorities, which enabled us to hear what was most significant for them and their families. 143 interviews were conducted online or by phone by 7 local researchers (3 disabled), with appropriate inclusive support. Nearly everyone was interviewed twice to …
Evolving Social and Political Dialogue through Participatory Video Processes
Spaces for social and political dialogue within communities and across social levels in inequitable contexts generally do not incorporate difference across community, or enable the most marginalized people to participate meaningfully. In this article, we propose that participatory video can contribute to building agonistic pluralism, namely a recognition of the unavoidable tensions between perspectives, and maintaining, rather than erasing, diffe…
Participatory Video: A Practical Approach to Using Video Creatively in Group Development Work
